Description:
Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Original pen and ink drawing by the British artist depicting the words "I just feel sad" on four fallen leaves.  Along the lower half of the paper are a number of abstract lines in brown ink.  On wove paper, ca. 1980.  Moderate toning along the top edge, and a small spot of white paint on the middle-left side of the drawing, else fine. Measures 8 x 10 inches (20.4 x 25.5 centimeters).  Provenance: Christopher Hanley Scott (1945–2002), partner to Henry Geldzahler (1935–1994); private collection, New York.Hockney met Henry Geldzahler, a curator at the Metropolitan Museum, at Andy Warhol's New York apartment in the 1960's.  Hockney and Geldzahler became close friends and travel companions, sharing a sense of humor, interests, and many similar life experiences.  Through their friendship, Geldzahler and his partner Christopher became the subjects of numerous works by Hockney.

Original illustration for the story of the same title by Robert Bristow, published in MALE magazine, March 1953.  Signed "Prezio" to the lower left corner.  Gouache and glaze on board.  Some stray paint marks along the outer board edges and adhesive remnants on the verso; overall fine.  Drawing 9.5 x 11.5 inches (24.1 x 29.2 cm.), overall 13.25 x 15.6 inches (33.6 x 39.6 cm.).  Provenance: From the artist's estate.American artist Victor Prezio was part of the 603rd Camouflage Battalion during World War II, "The Ghost Army" battalion composed of many people with a background in the arts employed to confuse the enemy by constructing tanks out of cardboard and other forms of subterfuge. ALS of the Austrian composer to the violinist Josef Kriegler, then at the Grand Hotel in Kitzbühel, Austria.  1 p.  Card (verso blank).  Berlin, February 20, 1933; sender's address hand stamped.  With envelope; address typed.  In full (translated from the German):  "Dear Mr. Kriegler, I remember you very well and am happy to hear that you are dedicating yourself to serious art.  I will have Dr. Webern, if he has time to listen to you, tell me what he thinks of you.  But please tell me yourself as well how it went.  Best regards, Arnold Schönberg." Signed and inscribed on the verso in ink from Bob Freeman "To George and Pattie," later gifted by George Harrison (presumably after his divorce from Pattie Boyd in 1977) to Ringo Starr and acquired by us from the Collection of Ringo Starr.  29 by 17 inches. Very fine.  "In 1978 Geroge Maciunas, founder and chairman of Fluxus, died in New York at the age of 47. In invert of these numbers the duration the piano-duett, performed to his memory by Joseph Beuys and Nam June Paik was planned for 74 minutes. Used; Like New/Used; Like New. New York: 24 May 1883. An invitation on thick card engraved by Tiffany & Co., 9 x 6 7/16 in. Engraving to upper portion features boats passing along the East River beneath the new bridge, flanked by two coats of arms. Matted with the embossed flap of the original mailing envelope and nicely presented in a gilt wooden frame. Would benefit from a fresh matting, a few bumps and spots to the card, else fine. A scarce unaddressed Tiffany engraved invitation to the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge. The events of the day included speeches, bands, cannon fire, fireworks and notable attendees such as President Chester A. Arthur and New York's governor Grover Cleveland.
