Taylor, at the Architectural Library, [1793?]. 8vo (227 x 140 mm), etched throughout, 25 plates, including pictorial title which is slightly spotted, 7 of the plates have some minor purple crayon over colouring or lettering, modern boards, endpapers renewed. Often credited to William Wrighte due to his earlier publication of 1767 entitled Grotesque Architecture, although there is no evidence for his authorship. The vogue for this style of garden furniture designed to resemble tree roots or entwined branches began in the 1750's but it was first made truly practical at the time of this issue with the introduction of decorative cast iron. This rare pattern-book being the only one wholly devoted to the rustic styles, depicting chairs, benches, tables, mirrors and chimney-pieces. First Edition, 96 pp., original pink embossed cloth, spine slightly faded, lettered in gilt on upper cover, uncut and partly unopened, a very nice copy. Collins, novelist and poet, was the son of a solicitor at Plymouth, and was for a time a teacher of mathematics at Queen Elizabeth's College in Guernsey. "Idyls and Rhymes", his first book was written while he was living in Guernsey, and includes poems on Wordsworth, the Daffodil, the Duke of Wellington and Hartley Coleridge. He settled in Berkshire and adopted a literary life, and was a prolific author, writing largely for periodicals. He also wrote a good deal of occasional and humorous verse, and several novels, including Sweet Anne Page (1868), Two Plunges for a Pearl (1872), Mr. Carrington (1873), under the name of "R.T. Cotton," and A Fight with Fortune (1876).

"Knight, Henry Gally (1786–1846), architectural writer and antiquary... Between 1816 and 1830 he published a number of poems, including 'Ilderim, a Syrian Tale' (1816), which often drew inspiration from his earlier travels through Spain, Sicily, Greece, Egypt, and Palestine. Knight's poetry received mixed reviews from Byron, and in 1831 he turned his attention to the study of architecture."—(Oxford DNB).

The Bibliotheca Corviniana which Matthias Corvinus, King of Hungary (1458-1490), collected in his Buda palace was one of the largest and most magnificent libraries of the times. Out of the original Corvinian collection 43 manuscripts and two incunabula are preserved in Hungary, and the present work is a discussion of them.

Thomas Buchanan was a Hull physician who "stressed the importance of cerumen as an aid to hearing... He was ahead of his time in stressing the importance of 'the will to hear', the tension caused by expectation, as is noticed in animals whey they 'prick up their ears'. He noted the effect of distance upon harmony, and of the baneful effect of loud sounds, stating that 'the Highland bagpipe, which at a little distance on a wide and blooming heath has a melody and sweetness particularly agreeable to the Scottish ear, may produce a stunning effect when played in a small apartment.'"—Stevenson.
