Description:
London: Copyright, The Associated Press Ltd., Published by The Daily Telegraph, 14 September 1956. Photograph. This photo shows Sir Winston S. Churchill, a curl of smoke emanating from the tip of his characteristic cigar, shaking hands with a keen-eyed and gesticulating Field Marshal Viscount Montgomery in September 1956. The gelatin silver print is on heavy glossy photo paper and measures 9 x 10.85 in (22.86 x 27.56 cm). The image is crisp. Condition is very good minus with a small creases to the upper right and lower left corners and minor edge wear. There are indications of light touch up work by the Sunday Telegraph Art Department to the heads of both Churchill and Montgomery. Some light scuffs and scratches are visible under raking light. There are two publication dates for this photograph marked by separate ink stamps on the verso, the first for The Daily Telegraph dated “14 Sep 1956” and the second for the Sunday Telegraph dated “19 Aug 1962”. The verso also features two newspaper… Read More

Description:
Admiralty House, London, 1940. Letter. This compellingly interesting item features two pieces of correspondence from early in the Second World War. The first is a typed, signed letter from then-First Lord of the Admiralty Winston S. Churchill – just 10 days before he became wartime Prime Minister – to German-Jewish journalist and émigré Alfred J. Fischer declining an appointment to meet. The letter is accompanied by the original Admiralty envelope. The second typed letter is signed by ChurchillÂ’s Private Secretary, John Peck, dated 8 June 1940, on 10 Downing Street stationery, addressing an apparent request to make inquiries into “the case of Mr. Fischer”. Together, these two pieces of early Second World War correspondence are noteworthy for occurring during ChurchillÂ’s ascendance to the premiership, for featuring his signature on his Admiralty stationery in his final days as First Lord, and limning the fraught, perilous fate of German Jews, even those who made it to supposed haven on Allied… Read More

Description:
Colonial Office, Downing Street, London, 17 July 1922. Letter. This is Winston ChurchillÂ’s 17 July 1922 autograph signed letter to T. E. Lawrence accepting LawrenceÂ’s resignation from the Colonial Office, accompanied by the original, franked envelope addressed and initialed in ChurchillÂ’s hand. This letter underscores the friendship and collaboration of two titanic twentieth century personalities and their shared work in securing post-First World War peace and political stability in the Middle East. From early 1921 to mid-1922, T. E. Lawrence “of Arabia” worked for then-Secretary of State for the Colonies Winston S. Churchill. Churchill had asked a reticent Lawrence to commit for a year. He gave Churchill more than he had promised, both in time and in achieved outcomes. Then, in July 1922, Churchill reluctantly released Lawrence from service. The autograph letter signed by Churchill fills the entire 8 x 10 inch (20.3 x 25.4 cm) front panel of a single, folded sheet of ChurchillÂ’s “Colonial… Read More

Description:
Hyde Park Gate, London, 1948. Letter. This 4 August July 1948 holograph letter is from “indefatigable Churchill literary assistant” Denis Kelly to Desmond Flower of Cassell regarding uncorrected errors in the soon-to be published British first edition of the first volume of The Second World War, The Gathering Storm (published 4 October 1948). The holograph letter is inked entirely in KellyÂ’s hand on the recto of a sheet of Hyde Park Gate stationery. Dated by Kelly “11/8/48” (11 August 1948), it reads: “Dear Flower, IÂ’ve found a number of rather hefty misprints in The Gathering Storm, & will send you a list…” Kelly acknowledges “…that it is too late to do anything about it now…” but suggests a review protocol for Cassell to follow “…before you print a second edition…” Tellingly, Kelly concludes “I havenÂ’t broken the news to W.S.C. yet, but I hope there isn't a second gathering storm about to break!” Pencil annotation at the upper left reads: “Mr. B [indecipherable} saw Mr.… Read More

The cartoon shows Churchill, the painter, painting over a portrait he loathed. ChurchillÂ’s 80th birthday on 30 November 1954 was a day of national celebration. The marquee event of the day was a televised ceremony in Westminster Hall where Churchill was presented with a portrait by Graham Sutherland, gifted to him jointly by the two Houses of Parliament. Churchill was Chancellor of the Exchequer and had just submitted Britain's first budget after he had restored Britain to the Gold Standard. The artist plays on several themes. First is Churchill's oft repeated portrayal as an infant or cherub. Second is his temperamental inclination to tackle Herculean public policy challenges. Description:
Toronto: The Copp, Clark Company, Ltd., 1900. First Canadian edition. Hardcover. This is the scarce Canadian first edition of Churchill's fifth book. Ian Hamilton's March was the second of Churchill's two books based on his newspaper dispatches sent from the front in South Africa during the Boer War. During this conflict Churchill was captured by the Boers. His daring escape made him a celebrity and helped launch his political career. There were three English-language editions – British, U.S. and Canadian. The U.S. and Canadian editions were published in November 1900. The Canadian is both the scarcest and most attractive of the three first editions, differing considerably in appearance from its British and U.S. counterparts, with a tan cloth binding illustrated with crossed Union Flag and White Ensign on the front cover and a red fleur-de-lis on the spine. The Canadian first editions seem particularly vulnerable to gutter breaks. They are also prone to severe spine toning. This copy is good,… Read More

Description:
London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1900. First edition, second printing. Hardcover. This is the British first edition, second and final printing, of Churchill's fifth published book. Ian Hamilton's March was the second of Churchill's two books based on his newspaper despatches sent from the front in South Africa during the Boer War. The first edition, second printing was produced a month after the first printing and is nearly identical, the main differences being the addition of the words "Second Edition" to the title page and notation of the second printing on the copyright page, a boxed list of the authorÂ’s preceding books on the half-title verso, and four small emendations to the text. This is an extremely nice, very good plus copy. How we wish it were a first printing! The good news is that it costs much less and looks identical on the shelf. The red cloth binding is far better than usually seen - clean and tight with sharp corners, no appreciable soiling, and bright gilt. Spine presentation… Read More

Description:
New York: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1900. First U.S. edition, only printing. Hardcover. This is a signed U.S. first edition, only printing of Winston Churchill's fifth book – his final book chronicling his adventures as an itinerant soldier and war correspondent. The young Churchill almost certainly signed this copy in late 1900 or early 1901 during his first North American Lecture tour before he returned to England to take his first seat in Parliament. Condition of this signed copy is good plus – sound, original, and complete despite some typical wear and defects. The red cloth binding remains square and tight with bright gilt and no appreciable color shift between the covers and spine. Overall scuffing is most pronounced to the extremities, and there is a small, dark stain on the front cover. A single, faint, jagged vertical line – one on both the front and rear covers – seem to indicate that the boards were once a bit creased, but the boards nonetheless remain rigid and straight, with no… Read More

London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1900. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a finely bound British first edition, first printing of ChurchillÂ’s fourth published book. Ian HamiltonÂ’s March is the second of ChurchillÂ’s two books based on his newspaper despatches sent from the front in South Africa. This book and its preceding companion, London to Ladysmith via Pretoria, are Churchill's final literary effort as an itinerant soldier and war correspondent before embarking on his storied political career. This is a compellingly handsome example of the fine binderÂ’s craft, in full red Morocco by Bayntun-Rivière. The binding features hubbed spines with gilt-ruled compartments, gilt-decorated bands, and gilt-hatched spine ends. The spine features the title, author, and publication date, with a gilt lion rampant in each unprinted compartment. This is an inscribed U.S. first edition, only printing of Winston Churchill's fifth book, the second of two books based on his despatches sent from the front in South Africa during the Boer War. This was the final book from ChurchillÂ’s early career as an itinerant calvary officer and war correspondent. This copy was inscribed by then-twenty-six-year-old Churchill in Chicago on 10 January 1901 during Churchill's first lecture tour of North America. The signature, in black ink in four lines on the upper half-title, reads: "Winston S. Churchill | to | F. Wight Neuman Esq. | 10.1.1901". Such early signatures in first editions of Churchill's early works are quite scarce, even more so for U.S. first editions.    The U.S. first edition saw only a single printing bound in pebble grain red buckram which proved susceptible to blotchy wear and discoloration, particularly on the spine.
