Description:
London, England: Stanford's Geog[raphica]l Estab[lishmen]t, 1931. Very good. Map measuring 44" x 33¼" partially glued down as issued to heavy card stock bifolium measuring 14¾" x 9" and with two pages of text and images on map's verso. Very good: minimal wear to the map which has a few insignificant spots of staining, a few small separations at intersections and a 3" jagged internal tear intersecting the large N and G in MONGOLIA. Bifolium with a 3" split at top of spine and ½" split at bottom, light spotting and edgewear; pages lightly toned with some dogears and scattered spotting. This is a large map of East Asia that doubled as a promotional for the Java-China-Japan Line (JCJL). JCJL was a Dutch-owned company, established in 1902 to serve the shipping routes between the Dutch East Indies, China and Japan. Bakersfield, California, 1961. 12¾" x 12¼". Embossed imitation leather over boards, disbound scrapbook. 36 pages with 70 mostly black and white photographs and around 40 items of ephemera either pasted or laid in. Photos measure from to 3½" x 3½" to 3¼" x 4¼" and about half are captioned; some of the ephemera captioned with context as well. Album good: disbound with toned leaves; photographs generally near fine or better, ephemera very good or better; lacking two photos. The Kern County Hot Jazz Society was founded in Bakersfield, California in July 1961. The group's purpose was for"Families [to] meet and enjoy modern Jazz music and playing music together" and their motto was "A Non-Profit Organization for the Prevention of Rock-And-Roll and Progressive Jazz. (Hot Springs, Arkansas?): N.P., 1945. Fourth edition stated. Good +. 6¾" x 4¾". Stapled thin card wrappers. pp. 91, [4] + laid in leaf containing correct text for page 20. Good plus: wrappers moderately worn and dust soiled, occasional light staining and/or toning to text; one bifolium detached. This is a ritual book for the Heroines of Jericho, presumably issued for Arkansas chapters. It contains step by step instructions and ceremonies on how to open a new court, how to enter a court, how to confer degrees, burial ceremonies for members, and much more. There's also a photographic portrait of the author, John L. Webb, and several illustrations including the design of regalia aprons. While the book contains no statements regarding publication, OCLC locates a copy of the third edition with the same pagination and with an attribution of place of Hot Springs, hence ours above.
