New York: J.A. Bleecker, 1880. Cards. Very Good. 1 trade card with chromolithographed illustration on one side. J.A. Bleecker, at 433 8th Ave., New York, offered "All the weekly papers, libraries and monthly magazines" as well as Christmas and New Year calling cards, Harding's dime music, and "musical strings and fixings." The business also did job printing and bookbinding, and tuned and sold pianos. A man of many talents, in 1887 he taught acting and elocution. No date, but Jacinto Antonio Bleecker (b. 1852), stationer, was located at 433 8th Ave. from 1877 to 1885. In Very Good Condition: text side lightly soiled; chromolithographed side is clean and bright.

The largest (17 x 8 cm.) has "Bookmark" and a calendar for August of 1881 on the front along with a color illustration of a woman standing in a field signed H. A. Goodwin. The others have amusing color illustrations on the front, including frogs riding penny-farthing bicycles. One has a blank back; the others have advertising for J. & P. Coats thread. In Good Condition: the tall card is scraped along the lower edge; one card is lacking a lower corner; the tall card has a 1x2-cm. scraped section at the upper edge of the back; the back of the others are scraped and discolored with some loss of printing.

Black lacquer boards; front board illustrated with scene of a woman and a man painted in gilt and red. None of the postcards have been used and none have dates of publication. Some of the cards were produced by Tonboya in Yokohama; the firm was actively publishing hand-colored postcards from about 1910 to about 1930. The first postcard is a view of Mt. Fuji with a foreground illustration painted in gilt and black. The next two are portraits of Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken in black with a gilt emblem above each of their heads. In 1870 Jared Hoch (1825-1909) was one of the commissioners of the Friedensburg Turnpike Road Company in Berks County. Here he offers himself as a candidate for county commissioner of Berks County, Pa., at the Democratic Nominating Convention, having been next to highest in the two former conventions. It is unknown whether he was the Democratic candidate, but he was not one of the three men who began serving three-year terms in 1885. Ephemera from 19th-century local political campaigns is scarce.
