Description:
New York: Neale Publishing Company, 1907. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 12mo, 61pp. A very good copy, rebound in 20th century red buckram with gilt spine title. Some soiling to a rear blank leaf, else a crisp, sound, clean copy. SIGNED on the title page by Stuart's grandson: "J. E. B. Stuart III 10-16-59, Harper's Ferry, W. V." This date represents the centennial of John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry, which was foiled by a group of U. S. Marines led by Robert E. Lee, whose ranks included several future Confederate (and some Union) military figures, most notably J. E. B. Stuart. This autograph was certainly obtained at a re-enactment done at Harper's Ferry on that date, which helped to kick off a six-year national commemmoration of the conflict's centennial. The monument memorialized in this volume stood for over a century at a prominent intersection in Richmond, and was taken down in 2020 as part of a national reckoning with the legacy of slavery and the Confederacy.

Description:
[Etajima, Hiroshima], 1955. Hardcover. Near fine. Oblong quarto. Typical souvenir photograph album made from painted wood, string-tied. In near fine condition; sturdy and well-maintained with some chips to the corners. Nine album leaves used (another 15 unused). About 49 smaller photographic prints measure aboout 2" x 4" or 3" x 5", while another 5 are larger. Some ephemera, mostly Navy-produced mimeographs, is laid in to mounts (as are the photographs). Another six photographic prints are laid in to the front of the album, each of which is a vernacular snapshot of the Hiroshima Peace Tower, a now-iconic image of the defiant dome structure, which stands near ground zero of the atomic bomb detonation. Most of the images are well-composed snapshots of local farmers, street vendors, and the like, while the larger images are mostly aerial shots of Camp Eta Jima, the Japanese military base at this time occupied by the Americans in the wake of World War II. While a postwar album, this… Read More

Description:
Osaka: Liason Office, Osaka Railway Division, Japanese Government Railways, 1947. First Edition (?). Hardcover. Fine. Quarto, 66pp., illustrated with 89 mounted photographs. A fresh, clean example, sharp and bright, with the only visible flaw being some waviness throughout due to the mounting glue. The prints themselves are universally in excellent condition; overall fine. An absolutely extraordinary visual collection of the rolling stock (locomotives and all sorts of freight cars) used by the Japanese Government Railways in the immediate post-war period. The prints are each about 4" x 6", and the developer cropped the exposiure to jst the immediate area around the trains, leaving large white borders, which give the trains themselves a real "pop." Int he mid-19th century, Japan was an extremely isolated society, both from the rest of the world, and also to some extent internally, with different regions of the main island quite distinct culturally. The railway system, which began construction in… Read More

Description:
Hirosaki, Japan, 1941. Hardcover. Very good. One photograph album, measuring about 6.5" x 8" (17cm x 20cm), filled with portraits and some snapshots (46 in various sizes, mostly smaller than 3" x 3", a few larger), and also 45 small-format or regular size real photo postcards (the smaller ones measure about 3.75" x 2.5"). Album in very good condition with very mild edgewear, and the photographs, mostly laid-into mounts, are in excellent condition (some are glued to the album leaves). Each photograph has a detailed caption in Japanese, which we have had translated by a service (it's a literal translation - not edited for style). There are many portraits of soildiers, doctors, and some women who we presume, based on the era, are nurses. The most interesting image (to this catalogues) is a larger format photograph (about 5.5" x 3.5"), which documents a "concert bringing consolation to the injured soldiers" held at the Hirosaki Municipal Hall. There… Read More

Description:
New York: Weston Associates, 1960. Staplebound. Very good. Quarto, unpaginated [24pp.], illustrated. Very good in the publisher's stapled wraps, with a thin area of dust-soiling to the top of the front wrap, and some gentle creasing to the spine. Staples gently rusted, but sound. A fantastically designed concert program for the 1960 Newport Jazz Festival Concert Tour. Within are profiles of Anita O'Day, Thelonious Monk, George Shearing, and others. We could find very little material written about this concert tour, though Newport Jazz Festival producer George Wein is known to have organized some tours involving some of the major performers at the storied festivals during the late 1950s and early 1960s. The actual Newport festival in 1960 was one of the most memorable - there were several riots, mostly involving frustrated would-be concertgoers who were unable to secure tickets, and fought with police in the small, ritzy town of Newport. OCLC records no holdings of this program, nor any other from a… Read More

Description:
Chardon, Geauga County, Ohio: J. S. Wright, 1857. Very good. Receipt printed on blue paper, measuring about 7 3/4" x 3 5/8". Numerous old flattened folds, and some isolated toning, but clean and legible, generally very good. An informative piece of ephemera from this Chardon, OH publisher and printer. On the left of the receipt is an advertisement for job printing, executed in eleven (our count) different type faces. The receipt was issued to one William T. Rexford, for a year's subscription to "The Jeffersonian Democrat" (whole numbers 339-391, volumes 7-8), for the sum of $1.50. The newspaper was founded in 1849 as the "Free Democrat," and its name changed perhaps a dozen times over the following decades. Despite its name, it was actually a Temperance-oriented Republican newspaper. Its direct descendant is still published today, as the Geauga Times Leader. The American Antiquarian Society holds a number of issues from 1859 onward, but just three (two damaged) from before that year. This a nice,… Read More

Description:
[Washington]: [Government Printing Office], 1860. Hardcover. Very good. Octavo, 255pp., plus Index to Testimony at rear. A very good copy in the publisher's brown blind-tooled cloth, with gilt spine, which reads "Harper's Ferry Invasion." Mild wear to extremities, and very light foxing, but a sound, clean copy. A notable association copy, bearing this pencil inscription on the front free endpaper: "Saml. Hanson, Jnr. 1861 Jan 18/61 from Jefferson Davis, Esq. Senator from Mississippi." Though someone has pencilled the word "autograph" above the inscription, the inscription is clearly in Hanson's hand, and cerrtainly does not contain Davis's autograph. Nevertheless it appears that this copy of Virginia Senator James Murray Mason's report on the Harper's Ferry raid was given from Davis to Hanson, and at a very busy moment in Davis's career. On January 6, 1861, Mississippi had seceded from the Union. Davis remained in his senate seat until the 21st, when he received official notification of secession.… Read More

A crisp, clean smoker's copy, about fine in the publisher's decorative paper jacket over cardstock wraps. With tissue dust jacket, age-toned and with normal chipping. Philadelphia: Herline & Co., Lith. (printer), 1871. Very good. One sheet, measuring about 11.5" x 8.5". Printed in about five colors. In very good condition, with some mild dust-soiling, more concentrated towards the upper right. A great image, depicting a close view of the portable Tabernacle supposedly used by the ancient Israelites before they could build the Temple in Jerusalem. There is some extremely faint text imprint on the verso, indicating this engraving was likely neatly excised from a book. Color is used sparingly, but nevertheless ably illustrates important details of the structure. A single separately listed holding is noted in OCLC, at AAS. Scarce.

A crisp, clean copy, near fine, in the publisher's terra cotta boards, with gentle rubbing to extremities. In a near fine dust jacket, with a few small tape repairs to verso, but presenting brightly and attractively. This copy SIGNED by Mirsky on the title page, and additionally INSCRIBED by him to fellow Jewish-American novelist Cynthia Ozick on the front free endpaper. Description:
Newark, NJ: The Jewish Community Blue Book Publishing Company, 1924. Flexible boards. Very good +. Octavo, 861pp., illustrated. A very good or better copy in the publisher's limp navy cloth. Binding a touch shaken, and the bottom corners gently worn, but a clean copy with only an owner's inked name on the front free endpaper, else unmarked. An extraordinary publication, which gives a rich, detailed glimpse into Jewish life in Newark in the 1920s. Though undated, there are many references to events in 1922 and 1923, which suggests a publication date of 1924. The primary contents consist of names and addresses of Jewish Newarkers in several lists; among these are synagogue congregations, contributors to various fundraising drives, club members, and civic groups. Most interesting to us are the few dozen leaves of advertisements, mostly (though not exclusively) for Jewish-owned businesses of all kinds in the Newark area. Finally, at rear is a collection of photographic portraits of "outstanding men and… Read More

[No place - New York?]: American Society for Meliorating the Condition of the Jews, 1827. First Edition. Self-wrappers. Near fine. Octavo, pp. 130-144. Near fine in self-wrappers, with old horizontal folds, long flattened. Bright and clean, with three small library stamps to the front wrap. A very scarce Baptist pamphlet, which advocated the conversion of Jews to Christianity. The beginning of this issue discusses the testimony of a converted Jew in Amsterdam whose brother died "at peace" having converted to Christianity. Slightly more common than this periodical appears to be a rival publication, published by Solomon Jackson, entitled "The Jew," which was a direct reaction to what he saw as a threat from the publishers of "Israel's Advocate." Though known to institutions, library holdings are scarce and often incomplete. We find possible full runs at The American Antiquarian Society, Columbia, Harvard, and a single issue at Princeton. Near fine in self-wrappers, with old horizontal folds, long flattened. Bright and clean. Very faint old library stamp on the front wrap (this came from a small collection that was deaccessioned long ago). A very scarce Baptist pamphlet, which advocated the conversion of Jews to Christianity. The beginning of this issue discusses the vague beginnings of an idea to "resettle" American Jews into a colony where they would be converted to Christianity. It continues with a review of the latest news from similar organizations in London and in Europe. Just a touch of dust-soiling to the top edge, and the spine gilt a bit dulled. In a good or better dust jacket, creased and with a few challow chips and tears. The spine is a bit faded, with the price scuffed out in the middle of the spine. Still better than often found, and the jacket is almost always missing. Johnson, the first Black athlete to obtain international fame, was a very controversial figure in his day, having married three white women, and been unafraid of the public backlash during the height of Jim Crow segregation. This autobiography discusses both Johnson's boxing career and his personal life, and includes some laudatory essays by Damon Runyon (misspelled "Runyan"), his wife Irene, and several others.
