Description:
Newark, VT: Janus Press, 1973. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. A wonderful interactive artist's book from one of the great book artists of the 20th century. 39 sheets of colored acetate and die-cut paper, in a folding cloth portfolio. 8 by 10 inches (roughly). In this wordless book (the only text is the title and publishing information, printed on the front pastedown), Van Vliet reinterprets the ideas in her landmark 1964 work, Sun, Sky, and Earth. In that book, flaps of various shapes and colors could be flipped open to create minimalist landscapes abstracted to simple shapes and colors. Some of the flaps included descriptive words. In this "book", Van Vliet has abstracted not only the elements of landscape but the book itself. The "flaps" are no longer attached to the binding, leaving the "reader" (there is no text, but what else would we call the user of a book?) free to rearrange the sheets at will. One can even conjure a science fiction landscape of many suns, rising or setting in a sky of…

Description:
Kyoto: Bunsen Shoin, 1929. A book tracing the history of US-Japanese relations focusing on the growth of anti-Japanese sentiment in the United States and the legal and diplomatic efforts to exclude and discriminate against Japanese immigrants. The author then turns to the growing possibility of a war in the Pacific between the two countries. The book fits into a nationalist, imperialist narrative that was growing in Japan throughout the 1920s which argued for the inevitability of a US-Japanese conflict (several Western scholars also published books on the likelihood of a Pacific War during this time). Tamura's work is very little known, with just one library holding (in Japan), despite this copy being a fifth printing, published four years after the first. The cover of the book has a Japanese flag on the front and a map of the Pacific Rim on the back, with lines showing distances between key locations. [6], [2], 169, [2] pages. OCLC: 703696048 (National Diet Library). Fifth printing. Old…

Description:
Pasadena, CA: Pacific Coast Committee on American Principles and Fair Play, Pasadena Chapter, 1943. First Edition. Pamphlet. Very good. A reprint of an article from Harper's Magazine by a Navy doctor stationed in Hawaii who describes the response of the Japanese-American community to the attack on Pearl Harbor and to the internment of Japanese Americans on the West Coast. Coggins describes their efforts to demonstrate that they were loyal Americans, and he concludes with a report on the overwhelming number of Japanese Americans living in Hawaii who volunteered for the military. The publisher of this reprint was an organization that sprouted up in 1942 to defend the constitutional rights of Japanese Americans and to fight the anti-Japanese prejudice of so many white Americans. This pamphlet includes a brief introduction opposing race prejudice and promoting the patriotism of Japanese Americans. The final page includes a listing of Japanese Americans from Pasadena who had enlisted or volunteered for…

Description:
New York: Japanese-American Commercial Weekly / Nichibei Shuhosha, 1914. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. The first and only yearbook/almanac issued by the Japanese-American Commercial Weekly (Nichibei Shuho, later Nichibei Jiho). While similar in format to the yearbooks and directories published at the time on the West Coast, this book is much more focused on the import-export businesses that were located on the East Coast, as opposed to the heavily agricultural economies of Japanese-American communities in California and the surrounding states. The yearbook/almanac-style section covers the history of US-Japan relations, including the Gentlemen's Agreement, an explanation of the US Constitution, a summary of the Pure Food Law, copyright, banking, and all manner of government forms and permits. The Who's Who section provides profiles (in Japanese) of many if not all of the business men and government representatives listed in the accompanying short English-language directory. The end of the…

Description:
Washington, DC: Library of Congress, 1980. Photograph. Near fine. A portrait of an unidentified migrant farm worker on the edge of the California desert, just north of the Mexican border. He sits on a dirt berm, in a row of other men, suggested only by their elbows, which are visible at the edges of the image. Lange took this image while working for the Resettlement Administration and the Farm Security Administration (two WPA agencies). The most famous image from this period in her career is Migrant Mother, the iconic Depression-era photograph. Lange's original title, typed on a label on the print in the Library of Congress was "Migrant Agricultural Worker". It is sometimes called "Jobless on the Edge of a Peafield" or "Migrant Agricultural Worker, Near Holtville." At the time she took this photograph, Lange was working for the federal government and so the negatives belonged to her employer. For decades they have been on deposit at the Library of Congress and for many years, anyone could ask the…

Berkeley: Photolab for Serendipity Books, 2010. Fine. Black-and-white photograph. Image 14 by 18 inches on 20-by-16-inch paper. This photograph was most likely taken in 1951, during Mantle's rookie year, when the photographer, Osvaldo Salas, was active taking pictures of the New York Yankees. Salas was a Cuban exilie photographer who was active in New York during the 1950s, before he returned to the island after Fidel Castro's forces successfully overthrew the governent. The print was commissioned by Peter Howard of Serendipity Books, in Berkeley, who somehow obtained the negative and had three (or maybe five--the records are not clear) exhibition quality prints made by Photolab, also in Berkeley. The edition was 5 prints. Fine. Titled in pencil on the verso (back).
