Description:
This is a first edition of Jassy, the 10th novel by the prolific English writer Norah Lofts (1904-1983). The book was published in the UK in 1944 and in Canada and the US in 1945. This is one of the first US copies. Lofts is now considered to be one of the most under-rated writers of her generation. All of her books were best-sellers; many were made into films, including this one. Jassy is best classified as a Gothic Romance. But it is not a romance at all--it is about the life of a troubled woman. It is a ripping yarn with a shocking ending. This copy is plain green boards, with some shelfwear, just at the edges. The back cover has some marks on it.Inside, the paper has darkened as you would expect and the binding is loosening a little, just at the title page (see photo).Overall, it's in excellent condition.

Description:
This is a first edition (1962) of John Adams, by the American historian, journalist and academic Page Smith (1917-1995). It was a best-seller, and critically-acclaimed, winning numerous prizes. It is considered by many to be the best biography because Smith did such a great job of putting Adams' story in the correct historical context, every step of the way, because of the amount of detail included, and because he so clearly drew all of the personalities of the characters involved. This copy was published by Doubleday, for the Book of the Month Club. It is in two volumes, which come in a teal cardboard slipcase--the slipcase shows a lot of wear. There are lots of black and white photos inside but the books are quite plain, just pale gray boards with brilliant gold and red lettering. The dust jackets have the same design; in both cases, they are in fine shape, save for shelfwear to the spines only.

Description:
This is a first edition from the classics series published by International Collectors Library in 1970. John Brown's Body (1928) is an epic poem written by the American poet Stephen Vincent Benét (1898-1943). Its title references the radical abolitionist John Brown, who raided Harpers Ferry in Virginia in the fall of 1859. He was captured and hanged later that year. Benét's poem covers the history of the American Civil War until Lee's surrender at Appomattox. There are eight fictional characters that comprise north and south, soldier and non-soldier, men and women, white and black, slave and freemen. They are introduced to round out the story of the Civil War and the actual events and leaders. It won the Pulitzer Prize in 1929.
This is a lovely copy. Red leatherette, with a gilt design on the cover and spine and a bound-in silk bookmark, which remains undisturbed.

Joseph the Provider is the fourth book in Mann's four-part series Joseph and His Brothers, which Mann wrote over 16 years and completed in 1942. He re-tells the stories in Genesis, chapters 27-50, putting them in historical context. Mann, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1929, considered it his greatest work.
This book was first published in Sweden (in German) in 1943.
In 1944, it was published in English, in the US, by Knopf. This is a first printing of that English edition.
It is 416 pages + notes.
The cover is plain black with a gold feather, and there is gold lettering on the spine. It was printed in accordance with the war-time codes on paper and printing, so it's just a nice plain book. The pages have darkened a little, but there are no marks of any kind in it or on it.
