Description:
(JAPANESE NOH THEATER) No place, no date. Circa 1930. Blue paper covers with stamped decorative motif, red string binding, measuring 10 ½ x 7 ½ inches with 28 double-fold pages. Water stain on back cover else very nice. An interesting costume and set design book of masks and costume and set elements for a Noh theater play. Noh is a stylized and symbolic form of classical musical dance-based drama, which has been performed since the 14th century and was designated in 2001 as a UNESCO Masterpiece. The 32 masks on eight pages, hand-colored and enriched with gilt and silver, include six iconic categories: "Okina", old men; "Jo", old men distinguished by their hair; "Otoko", man; "Onna", women; "Kishin", demons, which include "Tobide", savages and "Beshimi", goblins; and "Onryo", ghosts and spirits. Edinburgh: Bell and Bradfute, 1823. Original brown boards with paper spine label. Uncut. Binding rubbed, some light foxing to plates, joints starting, ink institutional ex libris and number on title page. Very nice unsophisticated copy preserved in a modern archival clamshell box with leather spine label. Seven engraved plates, including two fold-out plans (one with brief tears, no loss) by W. H. Lizars after John Hay and eight illustrations in the text of a journey by prominent Scottish gardeners and horticulturalists to regions recently under Napoleonic rule. Patrick Neill (1776-1851) was a Scottish printer and horticulturist and a founder of the Caledonian Horticulture Society. He and two other members sought to bring back fruits and vegetables which might be introduced into Scotland and documented public and private gardens including Malmaison (former residence of Empress Josephine) as well as commercial nurseries..
