Description:
Jacqueline Kennedy From the moment that John F. Kennedy was elected president in November 1960, it was clear that the incoming First Family would bring an unaccustomed sense of style, grace and optimism to the White House. Jacqueline Kennedy was a young woman of notable beauty, at once wistful and luminous, and of acute intelligence and exacting expectation. Her response to life was aesthetic, and to her appreciation of the arts, Mrs. Kennedy added a passionate sense of history. These qualities made her the ideal person to initiate a quest to bring beauty and history to the White House, one that was brilliantly executed, and led to the most influential redecoration in its history. On February 23, 1961, hardly a month after the inauguration, the 12-member Fine Arts Committee for the White House came into existence as a body empowered to develop restoration plans and ""locate authentic furniture of the date of the building of the White House and raise funds to purchase this furniture as gifts."" Description:
15/03/1866. James A. Garfield The Republican party - sectional and coming into power in March 1861 on the single issue of opposition to the extension of slavery - was forced by the secession movement to take up the task of preserving the Union by war. Consequently, the party developed new principles, welcomed the aid of the War Democrats, and found it advisable to drop its name and with its allies to form the National Union party. It was this National Union party that in 1864 nominated Abraham Lincoln, a Republican, and Andrew Johnson, a Democrat, on the same ticket. Lincoln's second Cabinet was composed of both Republicans and War Democrats. When the war ended, the Republican leaders were anxious to hold the Union party, which they essentially dominated, together, but instead found that there was a movement of the War Democrats back to their old party, which if it continued would leave in the Union party only its Republican members. And within those members, the radical leaders, favoring difficult… Read More

Description:
28/04/1787. Americana Just as the tumult calmed after the suppression of Shays rebellion, a great fire broke out in Boston, the largest to date in that city's history. These were grave back to back blows for the political career of then Governor James Bowdoin. The fire took place on Friday, April 20, 1787. About 100 buildings were totally destroyed by fire in the southern part of the town. A strong southwesterly wind drove the flames to the water's edge at the old West bay in the Charles River, which prevented more dwellings from being burned. The fire started at Washington and Beach Streets, and spread southerly to where the Tufts New England Medical Center now stands. It was low tide when the fire broke out, causing a severe water shortage for fighting the fire. What could have been a single-building fire became an inferno due to dry conditions and gusting winds. It was reported that light from the fire could be seen from 50 miles away, which is astounding. The April 26, 1787 Continental Journal… Read More

In 1844, he and Lewis Cass challenged former President Van Buren for the Democratic presidential nomination. When it became clear that the convention was deadlocked, Jackson protege James K. Recognizing Buchanan's support of the ticket and Pennsylvania's contribution to his election, Polk appointed Buchanan Secretary of State.Buchanan remained in office for Polk's full term, and was closely associated with the administration's leading measures, particularly the annexation of Oregon and the Mexican War. Description:
19/10/1802. James Madison The need to keep the Royal Navy fully manned was never stronger than in the opening years of the 19th century, as the Napoleonic Wars resulted in a lack of qualified seamen just when it was necessary to launch many additional warships. This was exacerbated because privateers, the Navy, and the merchant marine all competed for the same small pool of ordinary and able seamen. The government’s solution: impressment (or forcing men into service). The practice of impressing able men for the Royal Navy was as old as the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. The press gang was a terror not only to rogue and vagabond but to every able-bodied seafaring man and river waterman who was not exempted by some special act. It even ransacked the prisons. But the press gang harvested its greatest crop of seamen on the high seas, as merchantmen were stopped at sea, robbed of their able sailors, and left to limp short-handed into port. Desertion offered the only way of escape to the victim of the press… Read More

On 8 Thermidor (July 26) Robespierre unwisely gave a speech full of threats. The next day, the deputies in the National Convention decreed his arrest, and he was executed on July 28. This was nothing less than a coup. The new French Constitution of 1795 established a liberal republic with a franchise based on the payment of taxes, a bicameral legislature, and a five-man Directory. At the same time, in 1794 and 1795, French armies were extending their influence by invading nearby Switzerland, Belgium, Italy, and the Netherlands. The siege of Maastricht in the latter… Read More

Description:
21/09/1830. Jean-François Champollion Concerned about the safety of the artifacts under his care as Keeper of Antiquities at the Louvre, he seeks to avoid military serviceHistorically, scholars thought Hieroglyphics a complete mystery unlikely ever to be solved, and virtually nothing was known of Ancient Egypt nor understood of the writing it had left behind. Then, in 1799, Napoleon's troops discovered a stone in Rosetta, Egypt written in Greek, Hieroglyphics and Demotic, a cursive form of Hieroglyphics. The stone's contents were readily understood from the Greek, but the Hieroglyphic images remained indecipherable. Champollion was a child prodigy who graduated from language courses at age 11, and became a full professor at 19. He turned his attention to the Rosetta Stone to try and solve the puzzle. He determined that figures within ovals, called cartouches, represented proper names, then deciphered the names of Cleopatra and Ptolemy. These became the key to his unravelling the rest of the text.… Read More

17/05/1860. Jefferson Davis Undoubtedly the most significant Davis piece we have ever carried, containing as it does the carrot and the stick - peace or warAt the onset of the 1860 election year, the United States was at a breaking point as a result of the long crisis over slavery. The Compromise of 1850 had proven too narrowly based to solve the problems, and the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, promoted by Sen. Stephen A. Douglas of Illinois, had taken a different approach - the question of whether the territories would be slave or free would be left to the settlers under Douglas’s principle of Popular Sovereignty. Presumably, the more northern territories would oppose slavery while the more southern ones would permit it. But the act failed in its purpose. It gave rise to the Republican Party determined to keep slavery from territories. In 1855 and 1856, pro and anti-slavery activists flooded into Kansas with the intention of influencing the popular-sovereignty rule of the territory. Kansas became… Read More
