A very good copy in the publishers delux binding of highly decorative dark blue cloth binding with gilt lettering and illustration by Albert Angus Turbayne to front board and spine. Yellow peacock design on white endpapers. All edges gilt. Spine just a little dulled but overall a very good copy of this scarce beautifully illustrated book.

Original white paper covered boards with decorative gilt and multi colour decoration to front board. Original glassine wrapper. A fine, bright copy in the publishers original silk pattered paper covered box, with printed label on the front panel. the box has some rubbing and wear but is generally very good indeed and has done a great job of keeping the book protected and in fine condition.

Longmans, Green & Co. London. 1907. FIRST EDITION. First printing. Large 8vo. (8.5 x 6.4 inches). Colour frontis, 22 full page mono plates and hundreds of small engraved vignettes to the margins of the text pages, all by E. Caldwell. This is the scarce first issue with the margin drawings of a dung beetle pushing his load with his front legs rather than his back on pages 65, 337 and 457. These were changed in later issues. Some feint offsetting to the blank endpapers and a few pages with some minor spotting but generally a very bright and clean copy throughout. Publishers original dark green cloth with gilt illustrations and lettering to the front board and the spine. The board edges are lightly rubbed and the gilt just a little dulled but overall a very good copy of this scarce first edition.

Integral publishers advert leaves at the end of each volume (iii, i, ii) but bound without the publishers catalogue in volume one. Some minor foxing to a few pages but generally a very good clean copy finely re-bound by Bayntun of Bath. Half brown morocco. Spines with raised bands, each with gilt decoration. Compartments double ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt. Tan cloth on boards Marbled endpapers. Top edges gilt. A lovely copy in a fine quality, highly attractive leather binding. Loosely inserted is a 4pp hand written letter from the author (" Your affectionate Dinah") to "My Dear Alice" ( her God Daughter, the subject of the poem "My Godchild Alice"), closely written in black ink on four sides of folded leaf, each side measuring 4.5 x 3.5 inches. Illustrated with 8 fine full colour plates plus 18 black and white line illustrations throughout the text. A very good, bright and clean copy. Publishers beige boards with colour plate mounted to front panel. Beige cloth spine lettered in dark brown. In the rare original colour printed dustwrapper. Aside from some minor bumping to the corners of the boards and a few small chips to edges of the dustwrapper (the worst chip, at the bottom of the spine, just shaves off the top of the J in the title) this is a lovely copy of this scarce title.

Just a hint of darkening to the spines of both bindings but overall this is a near fine, lovely set of these classic books.

In an unusual hand painted wooden board binding. The boards are attached on metal hinges. The text pages sewn in with leather ties through the wooden spine. The front board features a painted colour bird drinking from a glass, the outlines and the lettering burnt into the wood. A very good copy of this unusual cocktail book.
