SECOND GERMAN EDITION circa 1880, 4to, 242 x 192 mm, 9½ x 7½ inches, blue pictorial boards, printed black, girl sitting under a tree and floral decorations to upper cover, 2 children watch 2 herons on lower cover, pages: 100 + 3 - adverts. Five designs depicting children on frontispiece very prettily hand-coloured as issued, 112 line drawings for children to colour all by Greenaway. Stories and rhymes by George Weatherly translated into German by Fanny Stockhausen. Spine slightly darkened, 3 mm (1/8") missing at head and tail of spine, 5 mm (¼") surface paper missing on lower corner of upper cover, lower corner of lower cover slightly bumped, endpapers slightly browned, NO OUTLINES COLOURED IN, UNUSED. (Routledge?), 1902.. 1902, thin buff card (255 x 195 mm, 10 x 7¾ inches) with almost full page coloured illustration from page 63 of THE PIED PIPER OF HAMELIN. On verso is a full page coloured illustration showing 2 young women with toddlers in the centre and 20 other children in a continuous procession around them, the circle of children is the same design as that on the cover of Under the Window. Card slightly darkened, unused and 1 corner slightly scuffed and slightly chipped. The date 1902 is printed on the verso under the illustration. London, George Routledge, 1883.. 4 cards, 3 landscape, 1 portrait format, 187 x 245 mm, 7 3/8 x 9 5/8 inches, (Nos 2, 3 and 4 about 5 mm (¼") wider), each with different coloured illustrations and decorations and the calendar for the whole year, reverse blank, tiny hole punched at the top of each for hanging. 1) 4 small girls dressed for the seasons, 2 vases of tulips below; 2) 6 girls above and 6 below the calendar, dressed for the seasons; 3) 3 young children at the top, 2 young ladies at left, 2 young women each with a baby at right, 3 old ladies in winter clothes at foot; 4) the same size but portrait format: 2 little girls hold hands at top, 1 in a spring outfit, the other in winter clothes. Very tiny chips to some corners, very small closed tear to margin corner and tiny chip to top edge of No.1, reverse of No.1 marked at the edges by old sellotape now removed. A very good set. A very good clean bright copy. First published by Routledge in 1870 in a smaller format. The covers and endpapers were specially designed by Crane for this new edition. A succession of months disguised as guests arrive with seasonal gifts: January with sneezes and cold, February brings Valentine's Day, March the March Hare etc. December arrives at last, very old, riding a goat, dressed in a red coat trimmed with ermine and carrying a Christmas Tree.
