Description:
[London: by the Author, 1883. Hand-coloured lithograph by John Gould and H.C.Richter, printed by Hullmandel & Walton. Wove paper. A fine image from John Gould's magnificent folio work 'The Birds of Asia'. Now known as the Western Kolass Pheasant. John Gould notes that 'Two adult examples of this Pheasant grace the collection of the Hon. East India Company, and I am indebted to the Directors and to Dr. Horsfield for permission to figure so fine a bird for the first time in "The Birds of Asia".' 'The Koklass Pheasants have a very discontinuous area of distribution; some subspecies are found in the Himalayas from Afghanistan to Nepal, others in the east of Tibet and north-east China... Koklass are mountain birds living in forests mostly at altitudes of 4000 feet up to about 15,000 feet. They are rather solitary and are never seen feeding in flocks... The cock has an unusual crow and both birds make croaking noises reminiscent of a raven.' (A.Rutgers Birds of Asia 1969, p.38). The intended geographical… Read More

Description:
Berlin: Ernst Wasmuth, 1883. Colour-printed lithograph by Ernst Wasmuth. Very good condition. From "Griechische Keramik", Genick's superb work on Greek ceramics. The revival of interest in Greek ceramics was led by the travellers and cogniscenti who visited Greece and southern Italy in the mid to late-18th century. The Greek vase as an art form was first brought to the attention of an appreciative wider audience with the publication of a number of well-illustrated works on the collections of these dilletants. The most notable of this group was Sir William Hamilton (1730-1803), whose collection catalogue was published over a number of years starting in 1769. However, these early pioneers, working with a relatively small number of examples and using primitive techniques, were only able to begin to piece together the intricate story of this unique art form. It was not until a century later that art historians felt that they were understood the full scope and history of ancient Greek ceramics in general… Read More

Description:
Washington, D.C.: General Land Office [printed in New York by Julius Bien, lithographer], 1879. Color-lithographed map. A very detailed colour-coded map of Kansas showing towns, rivers, roads, railroads, among other landmarks. The General Land Office was founded in 1812 as an independent government agency responsible for the surveying and disposition of land in the public domain. Prior to the Civil War, much of the attention of the GLO was fixed on the settlement of such land east of the Mississippi which had resulted from military bounties and cessations by the original thirteen states. The end of the Civil War, the Homestead Act, the completion of the Trans-Continental Railroad and the military campaigns against Native Americans in the West (with resulting treaties that "transferred" land ownership to the United States), together engendered an incredible increase in westward settement and expansion. Newly-admitted states and newly-created territories west of the Mississippi were primed for… Read More

Description:
[London: Day & Son, 1849. Tinted lithograph by Louis Haghe, coloured by hand, mounted on card in imitation of a watercolour (as issued). Fine condition, apart from overall light toning, and slight cockling to paper. A fine example from the deluxe issue of David Roberts' monumental works on the Middle East: 'The Holy Land' and 'Egypt & Nubia', considered the greatest lithographically illustrated works issued in the 19th century. Roberts' masterpiece was issued in 41 parts over seven years in three states; tinted, tinted proof and in its finest form (as with the present image), coloured and mounted on card. It is beautifully lithographed by Louis Haghe, to whom Roberts paid tribute in glowing terms, `Haghe has not only surpassed himself, but all that has hitherto been done of a similar nature. He has rendered the views in a style clear, simple and unlaboured, with a masterly vigour and boldness which none but a painter like him could have transferred to stone'. Abbey regarded the work as `one of the… Read More

Description:
[Philadelphia: published by the author, 1835. Lithograph, coloured by hand, printed by Lehman & Duval of Philadelphia. A striking image from Lewis's "Aboriginal Portfolio." KeeMeOne (or KeeMeeWun) is listed as a signer of the Fond du Lac treaty of 1826 between the United States and the Chippewa, which re-confirmed the Prairie du Chien treaty ceding rights to mineral expliration and mining in Chippewa land. This treaty was also signed by Lewis Cass, Thomas McKenney, James Otto Lewis and Henry Schoolcraft. The Aboriginal Portfolio represents the first attempt to publish a collection of portraits of North American Indians preceding the works of Catlin, and McKenney and Hall. It is also one of the earliest large projects in American lithography, and one of the first large visual works to deal with subjects beyond the east coast of the United States. The Aboriginal Portfolio was originally published in Philadelphia, for the author, by lithographers George Lehman and Peter S. Duval. It was issued in… Read More

Washington D.C.: Published by the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey, 1920. Large folding nautical chart, printed on heavy paper stock. Colored. A rare original coastal survey of the Kennebec and Sheepscot Rivers including Bath, Georgetown, Boothbay, and Wiscasset. Established by President Thomas Jefferson in 1807 as the Survey of the Coast, the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey was the United States' first civilian scientific agency. This agency has followed its mission to survey the U.S. coastline, create nautical charts of the coast, and help increase maritime safety since its founding, and has often played fascinating roles in significant chapters of U.S. history. It served in all theaters of the Civil War in the service of the Union Army and Navy, pioneered acoustic exploration in the wake of the sinking of the Titanic, and during WWI it worked to detect enemy submarines. Description:
Philadelphia: H. S. Tanner, 1825. Copper-engraving with full period color. Tanner's 1825 map of Kentucky and Tennessee. Henry Tanner's A New American Atlas was the most distinguished atlas published in America during the nineteenth century. The maps were carefully constructed from the best and most recent surveys. They were finely engraved on a large-scale, printed on high quality paper, and carefully hand colored. Because of the great expense involved in the production and publication, the atlas was published in five parts between 1819 and 1823. This map was first published in 1823 in the fifth part of Henry Tanner's A New American Atlas under the title "Kentucky, Tennessee and part of Illinois." In this second issue, from the 1825 edition of the atlas, Illinois has been dropped from the title and the map has been augmented by the addition of new counties (particularly in southwestern Tennessee) and the additions of various cities and roads. Description:
London: [Wilson & Ogilvie for] Longman, Orme, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 1842. Hand-coloured lithograph by Fairland from a drawing by William Nicholson, after a painting by William Shiels. A beautiful and carefully observed portrait of one of the most historically important breeds of cow, from David Low's 'The Breeds of the Domestic Animals of the British Islands', a famous pioneering work illustrating the forerunners of all of today's most important breeds of horses, cows, sheep and pigs. Most likely descended from the ancient Celtic Shorthorn breed in Ireland, the Kerry Cow was first brought to the United States in the early nineteenth-century. Despite its initial success in North America, the breed could rarely be found on this continent after 1930 and now mainly inhabits southwestern Ireland. David Low, professor of Agriculture at Edinburgh University, produced these beautiful lithographs as a reference for those interested in the infant science of selective breeding. He was concerned that the… Read More

Philadelphia: F. W. Greenough, 1838. Hand-coloured lithograph by J. T. Bowen after a painting by Charles Bird King. In excellent condition. A fine image from McKenney and Hall's 'Indian Tribes of North America': `One of the most important [works] ever published on the American Indians' (Field),` a landmark in American culture' (Horan) and an invaluable contemporary record of a vanished way of life. The son of a Seneca mother and the Dutch(or possibly Irish) trader John Abeel or O'Bail, Kiontwogky (now Kaintwakon) or Cornplanter was one of three principal leaders of the Iroquois Confederacy of Six Nations and a renowned Seneca war chief who fought in the French and Indian War (1754-1763). In opposition to Joseph Brant's insistence that the Confederacy ally itself with the British in the American Revolution, Cornplanter, like Red Jacket, favored neutrality, claiming that the war was a white man's affair in which they shouldn't intervene. Despite his initial protestations and the uncustomary dissension… Read More

Description:
London: John Boydell, 1775. Engraving, coloured by hand, by William Elliott. (One expertly repaired marginal tear and some dust soiling to margins). Kilgarren, or rather 'Cilgerran Castle stands on a precipitous, craggy promontory overlooking the river Teifi where it merges with the Plysgog stream. The Teifi here is just at its tidal limit, so the castle was able to control both a natural crossing point and the passage of seagoing ships. We cannot be sure when this strong site was first fortified... Cilgerran is first mentioned by name in 1164, when the Lord Rhys captured the castle here. It was retaken by William Marshall, earl of Pembroke, in 1204, only to be taken again by the Welsh during Llywelyn the Great's campaigns in 1215. However, eight years later, William's son, another William, regained control, and it was probably he who built the imposing masonry castle we see today... In the 1370s an invasion from France was feared, and Edward III ordered that the now rather derelict Cilgerran be… Read More

Rome, 1774. Copper engraving, on two joined sheets, by Ottaviani after drawings by Savorelli and Camporesi, printed in light brown coloured ink with contemporary hand-colouring. Neat marginal restoration. A stunning plate from "Logge di Rafaele nel Vaticano": with contemporary colouring of the highest quality from the golden age of the hand-coloured print. The main panel shows King David, having subdued Syria, returning to Jersusalem with armour made of gold. A very fine image from the second part of a work titled "Loggie di Rafaele nel Vaticano" depicting the decorative work executed by Raphael and his assistants between 1518-1519 in the Vatican. They were drawn by Gaetano Savorelli, a Roman painter and draughtsman best known for his Raphael drawings, and Pietro Camporesi, a Roman architect, who worked for Pope Clemens XIII and Pius VI on rooms for the Vatican Museum. The first to illustrate the famous frescoes, these beautiful plates were probably planned as early as 1760, but were not executed… Read More

Description:
[London, 1790. Watercolour on laid paper. Unsigned, attributed to Sarah Stone. Annotated, "Lyn. 6 p.473/Male...anas spectabilis Lin" along the top edge. Sarah Stone was a prolific natural history painter who was active in London from 1777 to 1806, known for her exquisite brushwork, adept use of color, and mastery across a diverse array of subjects. Her primary patron was Sir Ashton Lever, for whom she diligently documented an extensive collection of ornithological, zoological, and ethnographical specimens. Ornithological subjects held a special place in Stone's oeuvre, constituting the majority of her known works, with her initial studies dating back to 1777 when she was just seventeen. Stone's meticulous attention to detail is evident in her preference for sized paper, an unconventional practice in British painting at the time, and her use of exceptionally fine brush strokes, sometimes employing brushes with only one or two hairs for the lightest feathers. Her association with the Leverian Museum,… Read More

Description:
London: T. Malton, 1783. Aquatint, coloured by hand, by Thomas Malton. A rare, early aquatint view of London by one of the great early exponents of the art: "My real master was Tom Malton" (J.M.W. Turner) This view of the Guildhall in King Street, London, shows the work that had been carried out on the south front in 1788-1789 from the designs of George Dance. In addition the colonnade to the west of the facade has been replaced by a brick wall. The church in the center is St. Lawrence Jewry, which was designed by Christopher Wren. The aquatint is a perfect example of the deep, spacious, but highly articulated perspective that Canaletto brought to London mid-century. Thomas Malton the younger, "son of Thomas Malton the elder [1726-1801], was born in 1748, probably in London. He was with his father during the latter's residence in Dublin, and then passed three years in the office of James Gandon, the architect, in London. In 1774 Malton received a premium from the Society of Arts, and in 1782 gained… Read More
