A later state of the second edition of this work, with "Montreal" spelled correctly on the titlepage. Very good. An later state of the second edition of this work, with "Montreal" spelled correctly on the titlepage. The life of Jesus rendered in the Nipissing dialect, a derivative of Algonquin. Originally published in 1861 as KA TITC TEBENIMINANG JEZOS, ONDAJE AKING, this work had been attributed to the missionary and accomplished linguist, Jean- Andre Cuoq, who wrote the preface to this edition. Cuoq, however, informed Pilling that Mathevet was the actual author. Jean Claude Mathevet (1717-81) was a missionary at the Lake of Two Mountains, now Oka, on the Ottawa River near Montreal. His Algonquin name was "Wakwi," and along with his work in that language he composed prayers, sermons, and grammars in the Iroquois… Read More

Description:
[Edo, ca. 1854].. Two sheets joined at the center to form a single broadside, total size 16 x 24 inches. Old folds. Light foxing and minor edge wear. Very good. An unusually large and well maintained "kurofune" kawaraban news-sheet depicting the entrance of Perry's Black Ships into Edo Bay in 1854. The majority of the broadside is occupied by a large map and illustration of Edo Bay, with Perry's ships depicted in dramatic manner in the lower center, with three masts, a paddle, a plain striped flag, and smoke billowing from the exhaust funnel. Text next to the ships describes them and estimates their crew complements. The land surrounding the bay is thoroughly labeled with some geographical features as well as the names and banners of the lords in charge. The section of the print above the map lists the larger daimyo with images of their Kamon, or clan crests, and descriptions of the defense forces they would be able to muster. The inset portrait is of an American soldier in uniform. Kawaraban were… Read More

Description:
Stockhol: C.H. Fahlstedts Forlag, 1862. [10],662pp. plus eight color lithographed plates (including frontis). Letterpress and illustrated titlepages. Contemporary three-quarter morocco and cloth, spine gilt. Corners bumped and worn, spine faded. Faint stain in upper edge of first quarter of the text, including some plates but not affecting the images. Lightly tanned. Good. Tales of adventures and travel in the California gold regions and environs, with some material on the role of the Mormons in the gold discoveries and their colonization in the West. Oddly, Wheat and Flake give precedence to the 1863 Berlin edition, the former not even noting this first edition. The lithographed plates are quite sensational, including rather vivid depictions of a prairie fire, a lynching, a buffalo hunt, and scenes round and about the gold fields. Zimmermann was the pseudonym used by Carl Vollmer, and this work was never translated into English. KURUTZ 655a. HOWES V140, "aa." FLAKE 9491 (note) WHEAT, GOLD RUSH 238… Read More

Boston: John P. Jewett, 1857. 189pp. plus handcolored folding map. Original brown publisher's cloth, stamped in blind and gilt. Head and foot of spine chipped, corners bumped and worn. Presentation inscription from the author on front fly leaf. Text faintly dampstained at edges. Nearly very good, the map very good. A guide to Kansas and Nebraska, containing much useful information for the emigrant, including an attractive map by J.H. Colton. The author wrote several such guides for states in the area, including Minnesota and Iowa. In addition to the usual material found in emigrant guides, this includes a long chapter about the very recent dramatic events in Bleeding Kansas. The map extends as far west as Salt Lake City and as far north as the Canadian border. This copy has a presentation inscription from the author, as well as a lengthy note by him: "Mrs. A.M.M. Storm, from her friend the author. N.H. Parker / So far as this goes, it is correct, but it is of course a true statement of the present… Read More

Shrink-wrapped to acid-free foam core. An unrecorded promotional broadside for the Kansas City Stock Yards printed around the turn of the 20th century. The piece was sponsored by Verner & Scroggin, Live Stock Commission Merchants, with offices in the Live Stock Exchange; their information is printed in a box just below the title. A central bird's-eye view of the stock yards is bordered on top and bottom by eight smaller vignettes of related companies, mostly meat processing and packing plants. These companies are Phoenix Packing Co., Alcutt Packing Co., George Fowler & Sons, Kansas City Horse & Mule Market, Jacob Dold Packing Co., Swift and Co., The Armour Packing Co., and Kingan & Co., Limited.
