B & w photos., drawings throughout. Read More

In his "retirement" years Chjanute turned his attention to aviation, and shared corresondence and innovations with a number of early aviators, including an extensive correspondence with the Wright brothers. Description:
Kansas City, Missouri: Kansas City Star Books, 1999. Quarto, blue cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, map illus. endpapers, viii + 389 pp. Very Good in a Very Good dust jacket. From dust jacket: Here is a comprehensive, richly illustrated account of a crossroads that made it big -- Kansas City. From its earliest known settlement as a tiny agency for the great WEstern fur-trading interests to today’s sprawling, diversified, multicounty metropolis, Kansas City’s story is drama, tragedy, success and high hopes rolled into one. Stifled by the bitter animosities and the destruction of the Civil War, the tiny City of Kansas awaited the coming of The Bridge, the first over the Missouri River and the herald of the railroads. On the rails and through the stockyards and out of the packinghouses and grain elevators and mills and bakeries, the city skyrocketed to prominence... Here, the great themes of the city’s rowdy 19th century adolescence are brought to life. Then decade by decade, the city’s… Read More

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, (2011). Octavo, black boards (hardcover), uncut, 310 pp. With 16 pages of illustrations and 5 maps. Fine in a Fine dust jacket. From dust jacket: In June 1846, General Stephen Watts Kearny rode out of Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, with two thousand soldiers, bound for California. At the time, the nation was hell-bent on expansion: James K. Polk had lately won the presidency by threatening England over the borders in Oregon, while Congress had just voted, in defiance of the Mexican government, to annex Texas. After Mexico declared war on the United States, Kearney’s Army of the West was sent out, carrying orders to occupy Mexican territory. When his expedition ended a year later, the country had doubled in size and now stretched from the Atlantic to the Pacific, fulfilling what many saw as the nation’s unique destiny -- and at the same time setting the stage for the American Civil War. Winston Groom recounts the amazing adventure and danger that Kearny and his troops… Read More

Description:
Algonac, Michigan: Reference Publications, Inc., (1984). Octavo, softbound (stiff yellow illus. slick wrappers), 203 pp. Fine. From lower cover: “Few episodes in American history are more romantic or controversial than the Battle of Little bighorn. For a hundred years scholars have sought a satisfactory explanation of what occurred that fateful day in 1876 when Sioux and Cheyenne warriors overwhelmed the Seventh Cavalry.” Custer’s men were supposedly superior in every respect except numbers, yet the unorganized and poorly armed Indian warriors inflicted one of the most stinging defeats ever suffered by the U.S. Cavalry. Of all the explanations put forward since then, none will be as controversial as the one offered here by Dr. Marquis, an obscure, dedicated physician who for many years in the first quarter of this century worked with the Cheyenne people near the Custer battlefield. He befriended the aged veterans of the Custer fight, became adept at their sign language, and spent days in… Read More

From dust jacket: As Chairman of the Federal Reserve (1979-1987), Paul Volcker slayed the inflation dragon that was consuming the American economy and restored the world’s faith in central bankers. That extraordinary feat was just one pivotal episode in a decades-long career serving six presidents. His insight into world-changing events such as the end of the Bretton Woods system, the closing of the “gold window,” :and the financial crisis of 2008 provide enduring lessons about the critical importance of open, disciplined, and efficient government. Told with wit, humor, and down-to-earth erudition, the narrative of Volcker’s career illuminates the changes that have taken place in American life, government and the economy since World War II. He vibrantly illustrates the crises he managed alongside the world’s leading… Read More

New York: Oxford University Press, 1996. Octavo, brown & black boards (hardcover), gilt letters, xii, 197 pp. Near Fine in a Fine dust jacket. From dust jacket: Ken Burns’s documentary The Civili War made television history, breaking all viewing records for a PBS series. Indeed, forty million people saw it, more than the populations of the Union and the Confederacy combined. Newsweek praised it as a “stunning television documentary.” For a generation of Americans, this documentary is the Civil War. Yet many professional historians criticized it sharply for ignoring the roles of minorities, pointing to a lack of women and of blacks throughout, a disregard for the aftermath of the war (particularly its legacy to race relations), a conventional emphasis on military history rather than social history, and uneven coverage of the military campaigns that gave short shrift to the bloody Western front.
