Description:
Katherine Lee Bates. Author of "America the Beautiful" and prolific writer, college professor, scholar, and social activist. "I am glad to have even these verses of mine circulating in printed form," Bates writes anxiously in this letter, "but it would be against all my instincts and principles to stand upon a platform and read them anywhere, least of all in college." Typed letter with clear, strong signature on Wellesley College letterhead. April 9, 1917. Wellesley, Massachusetts. 2 pages. Although Bates would go on to pen one of the most famous poems in American history, as well as lead a rich life as a teacher, author, and activist, this letter conveys all the anxieties that attend any writer. Bates seeks reassurance from her friends will support her in a pressing issue: reading her poems aloud. "...I depend on you and Martha Hale to nip in the bud any attempt on Miss Pendelton's part, or the part of anyone else, to give a college reading of my verses. You know you wouldn't do it yourself, and it…

Bates, Katherin Lee. American Author chiefly remembered for her anthem "America the Beautiful", but also for her many books on social reform,. Typed Letter Signed on Wellesley College Letterhead. Wellesley, MA: 1917. 2 pages. 8.5 x 5.5 inches. Wellesley, Massachusetts, April 9. 1917. . In this letter, bates seek reassurance from her friends to support her on a pressing issue, in part "... I depend on you and Martha Hale to nip in the bud any attempt on Miss Pendleton's part, or the part of anybody else, to have me give a college reading of my verse. You know you wouldn't do it yourself, and it would be entirely against nature for me to do it, even if the verse were better than they are. In this strange and urgent time I do believe that all idealists should mobilize and try in every way to keep the nobler aspects of war before the country. I am glad to have even these verses if mine circulated in printed form, but it would be against all my instincts and principles to stand upon a platform and read…

Press photo depicting the 1970 Kent State Massacre. Original silver gelatin photograph depicts a company of armed and masked National Guardsmen pointing their weapons and ready to fire at a group of students. Black and white image. 9.5" x 7" inches. This is a famous Life Magazine photo taken by student John Darnell. According to the caption, This press photo image was used for a 1974 story about the Ohio National Guardsmen who were indicted for violation of the students' civil rights. In March 1974, the federal grand jury in Cleveland probing the shootings indicted one present and seven former Ohio National Guardsmen on charges of violating the civil rights of four Kent State University students and nine others killed and wounded in the campus confrontation. Reaction to the event was polarized; despite being a gruesome and grossly illegal exercise of force, at the time many supported the guardsmen, while for student anti-war activists, it was an outrage that galvanized a protest wave that rocked…

Kentucky University, Crimson yearbook, 1897. Lexington, Kentucky. 10.75" x 7.5" inches. 147 pages. Red boards with gold gilt title. Yearbook includes class photos, group photos for various organizations and clubs, faculty photos, rosters, student literature and illustrations relevant to the school's pride. Group photos of classes, clubs and sports teams show period dress especially noticeable in the athletic uniforms. The university is famous for its athletics, particularly basketball, to this day. Student texts throughout capture the spirit of the moment and the student body. One essay written by an unnamed student reads, "We are the twentieth century boys. The rosy dawn of the new century is breaking; we break almost everything breakable except the previous class records. The foggy shades of the old century are rapidly dispersing." What's notable throughout the photographs are the number of female faculty and students, a small number by today's standards but remarkable for the time, illustrating a…

Theodore Van Kirk, Navigator of the Enola Gay, the plane that dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Inscribed Signed Photo, 11" x 8 1/2" black and white aerial photo of Hiroshima after the devastation of the atomic bomb. The image shows a city totally flatted out. Van Kirk writes on the photo in blue ink giving justifications for the civilian deaths of Hiroshima: "Our Atomic Bomb was dropped at 09:15 hours, Tinian time. 43 seconds later 60% of Hiroshima was destroyed. The number of killed and missing was 80,000. Unfortunately in modern warfare you cannot separate military and civilian targets - Dutch Van Kirk - Navigator - Enola Gay - Hiroshima- 6 Aug 1945". An impressive image and an amazing inscription as we rarely see any reference to the casualties of the A bomb by the crew members.

Description:
[LGBTQ] Kimberly Kemp Lesbian Pulp Archive of 4 Mass Market Paperbacks. Along with the names Dallas Mayo, Kimberly Kemp was a pseudonym used by Gilbert Fox, who authored a number of lesbian pulp novels through the 1960's and 1970's. Fox authored over 100 titles for Midwood Books, with heterosexual novels being written under the pseudonym Paul V. Russo. Because very little other literature was available for and about lesbians at this time, quite often these books were the only reference the public (lesbian and otherwise) had for modeling what lesbians were. Authors of lesbian paperbacks were both male and female, and often used pseudonyms - the male authors frequently used female names. This collection includes: [1] The Houseguest. New York: Midwood, 1964. First edition, first printing. The tagline reads: "She was like a magnet, a temptation as strong as the strange hungers she had so deliberately awakened". Cover art illustrates two women, one of whom is fixing her hair in a mirror wearing a silk…

The film elevated the science fiction genre and established new effects used for future productions like Star Wars, Star Trek, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. [Film] Akira Kurosawa's Shakespearian samurai epic "Ran". Large archive of 15 original vintage lobby cards. Ran is a medieval Japanese samurai epic based on Shakespeare's King Lear. Kurosawa spent ten years prepping for the film by storyboarding every shot in the film as paintings and designing costumes. The massive film used approximately 1400 extras and 200 horses and earned Kurosawa his only Best Directing Academy Award nomination. All 15 original vintage lobby card measure 9.5" x 11.5" and are printed in color. Images feature sprawling action shots of some of the samurai battle scenes, horses running through water, men charging on fields and several close-ups of Tatsuya Nakadai and Meiko Harada in several emotional scenes. All feature the title RAN in English and Japanese. Small text on margin reads "Ein Film Von Akira Kurosawa", so these were probably issued for the European release of the film.
