1919. Color woodcut cream wove paper, 3 7/8 x 5 3/16 inches (98 x 139 mm), full margins. Signed in pencil, lower right margin. In very good condition with no visible defects. A very rare, perhaps unique, impression. We have not found another impression on offer within in the last 20 years. Ludwig Heinrich Jungnickel was born in 1881 in Wundsiedel near the Fichtel Mountains, Austria. He built a reputation as a painter of animal paintings. He was educated at the Munich Academy of Applied Arts, then moved to Rome with his brother in 1897 and made a living selling his drawings. He was educated in church painting at the Tanzenberg monastery near Klagenfurt, Austria. He moved to Vienna in 1888, where he studied painting at the Academy of the Arts. He was engaged by the chocolate manufacturer Stollwerck around 1900, creating a number of works for Stollwerck's collectible cards. After spending a number of years in Vienna and Munich, he returned to the Academy of the Arts in Vienna in 1906 and became an… Read More

1945. Very good +. Gelatin silver print, 9 1/2 x 7 1/2 in. (241 x 190 mm) from the Roland Butler Collection, Press Agent, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus (1930s-1960s) Roland Butler Collection hand stamp on verso. This photograph was published on Pat Cashin's website Clown Alley on Saturday, February 10, 2007 with the following notice: "The photo, used extensively by the Ringling press dept. is of Kathryn Kramer and my father, Jack LeClaire. Kathy was a fantastic tumbler and back bender being able to put her chin on her rear end bending backwards. Photo probably 1945 as that was the year they had all the girls come in bareback . . . . My father could never understand why they used that photo for a press photo. . . It was taken on a rainy day (look at the sky) . . . My father dug out this old satin clown suit, very wrinkled from being packed in the trunk, for the rainy weather. Kathy passed away several years ago. She was a very close friend always. Of course my dad has been gone since… Read More
