Description:
New York: J.C. Riker, 1850. 12mo. 237 pages, plus frontispiece and extra engraved title page. Original purple cloth lettered and decorated in gilt on the spine and with gilt centerpiece on each cover. [19 cm.] Spine faded and with wear and tears at ends; corners worn. Heavy circular stains and impressions on covers, suggest the volume was perhaps used as a resting place for a tea kettle or the like. Hinges cracked, but holding. Lacking front free endpaper. Marginal damping to first few leaves including plates. Engraved title leaf chipped along lower edge (it apparently adhered to the frontispiece and was then torn free). Scattered foxing and small stains, not affecting legibility. Poor to fair only. First American edition? Title page states: "From the second London edition, improved and corrected," however no earlier edition from either side of the Atlantic is found by OCLC. A novel with the explicit purpose of inculcating Christian morals. "The author has written the… Read More

Original maroon suede wraps with gilt lettering on front cover. 23 x 16 cm. The yapp edges of the wraps are bent as usual and are chipped to the text block in a few places. Text is mildly toned; the lower edges of most leaves are slightly bumped. Still, very good. FIRST EDITION. Rumbaugh and dated his inscription, April 8, 1912. A rich source for local history discussing the early U.S. settlement of Key West, the development of the city government, hostilities with the Indians, the Civil War, Cuban immigration, education, churches, cigar making, salt manufacturing, commerce, hurricanes, shipwrecks, etc. One chapter is devoted to the "Women of Key West."… Read More

Description:
New York: Henry Holt and Co., 1912. iii, 377 pages, plus [6] pages publisher's ads. Original green cloth lettered and decorated in orange. 19.5 x 13 cm. Minuscule nick to the head of the spine and a bit of dust soiling to the top edge, still a bright, near fine copy. The scarce dust jacket is present but missing a large portion (approximately half) of the rear panel. The jacket also shows tiny chips and sun-fading to the spine panel, a short tear and creasing to the head of the front panel, and some light soiling. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, following the English original of the same year (with the title, “John of Jingalo“.) A Ruritanian satire of modern British politics. The book contains "running commentary on Utopian social solutions, particularly with regard to women's rights. Housman was actively involved in early twentieth-century feminist campaigns, including women's suffrage" (John Clute, in “Encyclopedia of Science Fiction). “Bleiler, “Checklist of… Read More
