Description:
Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1921. 1st Edition. FIRST FRENCH EDITION OF A 1921 LECTURE BY EINSTEIN ON THE "GEOMETRIZATION OF PHYSICS AND RELATIVITY AND THE RELATION OF MATHEMATICS TO THE EXTERNAL WORLD" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography 4, 330). WEIL 115b. French translation by Maurice Solovince. In the same year in which he won the Nobel Prize, 1921, Einstein delivered this paper as a lecture at "a commemorative session of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in honor of Frederick the Great" (Calaprice, Einstein Almanac, 65). In "Geometrie und Erfahrung" (Geometry and Experience), Einstein advances his theory that space conforms to non-Euclidean principles of geometry -- a corollary of the Theory of Relativity - and, as stated, generally sums up his views on the "geometrization of physics and relativity and the relation of mathematics to the external world" (DSB). It is in this lecture that Einstein also provides his famous answer to the puzzling question of why mathematics should be so well adapted… Read More

Description:
Paris: Hermann & Cie, 1930. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL PAPER WRAPPERS OF ANTONIADI'S MOST IMPORTANT WORK ON MARS. "An impressive" and beautifully illustrated publication, La Planète Mars is the comprehensive denouement of Antoniadi's Martian work. [In it], he presents a series of comparative drawings of the planet, all executed in meticulous stipple style, which show the canals resolved into vague, variously shaded, but distinctly separate features... [The] heart of the book, [though] is Atoniadi's corrected, updated, and systematized scheme of Schiaparelli's nomenclature for the planet's topography. [Antoniadi's] background in classical nomenclature made him the perfect man for the task; in all the book included 560 [named features] complete with summaries of each feature's observational history. ‘This [book], writes William Graves Hoyt "combined with later photographic work with large telescopes at prime locations tended to reduce the canal controversy, if not the question of Martian… Read More

Description:
Paris: Masson et Cie, 1910. 1st Edition. First edition, FIRST APPEARANCE IN PRINT OF ANTONIADI'S 1909 MAP OF MARS. In 1930, Eugène Michel Antoniadi (1870-1944), a Greek/French astronomer published a work also, as is the work offered here, entitled La Planète Mars based on research he had conducted in 1909. Antoniadi's volume contained what is considered the first accurate modern map of Mars. Antoniadi's map, however, had first appeared in print 20 years earlier in a 1910 volume of La Nature, Revue des Sciences et de leurs Applications à l'Art et à l'Industrie - this volume. Authored by Emile Touchet, secretary of the Societe Astronomique de France, the article is a thorough review of the history of research about Mars. The offering here is that 1910 volume of La Nature and, again, it houses the first appearance in print of Antoniadi's famous 1909 map of Mars. As did many in the scientific community in the early 1900s, Eugène Michel Antoniadi, a Greek/French astronomer, accepted Giovanni… Read More

Paris: Gauthier-Villars. 1st Edition. FOUR FIRST EDITIONS IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF LIPPMANN'S MILESTONE SERIES OF PAPERS DESCRIBING HIS NOBEL PRIZE WINNING INVENTION OF "A METHOD OF REPRODUCING COLORS PHOTOGRAPHICALLY BASED ON THE PHENOMENON OF INTERFERENCE" Nobel Prize Committee). Lippmann's prize represents the only time this prestigious award has been given for a photographic invention. Gabriel Jonas Lippmann was a French scientist and a professor of mathematical physics at the Sorbonne. In the first paper offered here (February 2, 1891) Lippmann announced to the Academy of Sciences in Paris that he had succeeded in recording a true-color spectrum which was permanent. To do so, he employs the ‘interference principle' - a method based on silver chloride's optical reaction to light waves). A little more than one year later, on April 25, 1892 (offered here in the second paper), Lippmann gave a second presentation at the Academy of Sciences. This time he displayed four color photographs of different… Read More

Description:
Paris: J.-B. Baillière et Fils, 1904. 1st Edition. UNCOMMON 1st edition of Henri Saintignon's 1904 book "Laennec sa vie et son oeuvre," an extensive work on the French physician and inventor of the stethoscope, Rene Theophile Hyacinthe Laennec (1781-1826). This work is largely available only in reprint. To date, Saintignon is considered the most respected biographer of the life and work of Laennec. Laennec is considered the father of clinical auscultation and wrote the first descriptions of bronchiectasis and cirrhosis and also classified pulmonary conditions such as pneumonia, bronchiectasis, pleurisy, emphysema, pneumothorax, phthisis and other lung diseases from the sounds he heard with his invention. Later, he would determine that his diagnoses were supported by the observations he made during autopsies. Laënnec went on to publish the first seminal work on the use of listening to body sounds, De L'auscultation Mediate (On Mediate Auscultation). "Laënnec perfected the art of physical… Read More

London: Macmillan & Sons, 1967. 1st Edition. BOUND FIRST EDITION, full volume, of the first tentative measurement of a CMB anisotropy, a slightly elevated temperature in the direction of a known quasar cluster. Wilkinson & Partridge's paper presents results "which appear to set rather stringent limits on the magnitude of possible density inhomogeneities in the universe" (Wilkinson and Partridge, 1967, 719). ALSO included is Nicholas Shackleton's reassessment of Emiliani's conclusions from his 1966 analysis of the oxygen isotope ratios in Caribbean cores as an indicator of variations in total volume of glacier ice sheets. WILKINSON: "The CMB radiation is a direct relic of the early universe. It is a unique and deep probe of both the thermal history of the early universe and the primordial perturbations in the matter distribution" (Tuluie, "Cosmic Microwave Background" AJ, 1996, 15). Description:
London: Macmillian & Sons, 1968. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION, bound full volume, OF REES & SCIAMA'S PREDICTION OF WHAT IS NOW CALLED THE "REES-SCIAMA EFFECT," an important correlation between galaxy density (the number of galaxies per square degree) and the temperature of the CMB in different parts of the universe. The effect is a nonlinear anistropy in the CMB caused by large scale density inhomogeneities in the universe such as quasar clusters. "The CMB radiation is a direct relic of the early universe. It is a unique and deep probe of both the thermal history of the early universe and the primordial perturbations in the matter distribution" (Tuluie, "Cosmic Microwave Background" AJ, 1996, 15). In this paper, English physicists Martin Rees and Dennis Sciama argue and predict that these large scale density inhomogeneities and their "effect on the angular distribution of the cosmic black-body radiation" are the result of perturbations caused by photon passing through an inhomogeneous, expanding… Read More

Description:
Braunschweig: Druck und Vieweg. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION (FULL VOLUME) OF THE PAPER IN WHICH EINSTEIN PROVIDES THE FIRST DESCRIPTION OF THE NATURE OF THE REFRACTIVE INDEX FOR X-RAYS, here clearly demonstrating that phase contrast effects are significant. "Inspired by the presence of fringes at the edges of objects in early X-ray images and by considerations of optical dispersion theory, Einstein suggested in 1918 that the real part of the index of refraction for X-rays in matter is slightly less than unity. This was confirmed in 1924 by Larsson et al. in measurements of wavelength-dependent refraction of X-rays by a prism" (Hornberger, Quantitative Amplitude, 1). "A century later, most x-ray microscopy and nearly all medical imaging remains based on absorption contrast, even though phase contrast offers orders of magnitude improvements in contrast and reduced radiation exposure at multi-keV x-ray energies"(ResearchGate, November 2015). Paris: Mallet-Bachelier, 1913. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS OF SAGNAC'S "TWO SEMINAL PAPERS" DEMONSTRATING THE SAGNAC EFFECT (Dictionary of Scientific Biography XII). The effect is most simply described as a phenomenon encountered in interferometry; elicited by rotation, it is a phase shift showing "the difference in travel time between two photons traveling along the same path in opposite directions" (Frauendiener, Notes on the Sagnac Effect in General Relativity, General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology, 8.23.18). Today, the Sagnac effect influences precise measurements on Earth and thus are taken into account and routinely incorporated into GPS calculations. "Together [the two papers offered here] constitute the first interferometry experiment aimed at observing the correlation of angular velocity and phase showing that if a beam of light is split and sent in two opposite directions around a closed path on a revolving platform with mirrors on its perimeter, and then the beams… Read More

Description:
London: Macmillan & Co., Ltd. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS OF THE 1967 LETTER TO THE EDITOR IN WHICH CARL SAGAN & HAROLD MOROWITZ HYPOTHESIZED LIFE MAY EXIST ON VENUS. The authors' letter to the editor presents an analysis of the issue of life on Venus and speculates about the possibility that the shadowy patches in the clouds of Venus are, in fact, microscopic life. Fifty-three years later, on the 14th of September 2020, research that set out to prove or disprove Sagan and Morowitz's hypothesis is close to proving them right. As did Sagan and Morowitz, the new research suggests that if life it exists, it is in the clouds surrounding Venus. Their 1967 letter begins with the following sentence "While the surface conditions of Venus make the hypothesis of life there implausible, the clouds of Venus are a different story altogether" (Sagan & Morowitz, 1259). "The unexpected atmospheric detection of phosphine, a smelly gas made by microbes on Earth, could spark a revolution in astrobiology" (… Read More

Further studies made it clear that this radiation was something new - not the same type as X-rays. He had discovered a new phenomenon - [spontaneous] radioactivity" (Nobel Prize Website Portal]. Description:
1934. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF NATURE'S SPECIAL 11 PAGE SUPPLEMENT ON LIQUID CRYSTALS BY NOBEL PRIZE WINNER SIR WILLIAM BRAGG. This is the first time "a coherent story has been made of the optical principles [of liquid crystals] by which their characteristic behaviour is exhibited" (Editors, Nature Supplement, March 24, 1934). Included are 14 figures. In 1913-1914, William Bragg and his son Lawrence " founded a new branch of science of the greatest importance and significance, the analysis of crystal structure by means of X-rays. If the fundamental discovery of the wave aspect of X-rays, as evidenced by their diffraction in crystals, was due to von Laue and his collaborators, it is equally true that the use of X-rays as an instrument for the systematic revelation of the way in which crystals are built was entirely due to the Braggs. This was recognized by the award of the Nobel Prize jointly to father and son in 1915" (Nobel Prize Committee). In this Nature supplement,… Read More
