Original Edition. twelve plates folded leporello style containing upwards of 70 images, plus seven pages of text describing the natural, historical, and cultural qualities of Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Bernardino. Bound in red moire cloth, with minimal wear to edges. Very good condition.

An illustrated, souvenir, hardcover, promotional booklet published by Ward Bros., Columbus, Ohio. in 1898.

The illustrations, taken from photographs, are on a strip folded accordion style, with the first leaf attached to the front cover. The seven unnumbered pages of text are attached to the back pastedown.

Running headline: "A Poetical Sport." When the book is open, the verso of a previous page (i.e. on the left) contains the Latin expression, the English meaning is on the recto of the opposite page (i.e. on the right). An expression "He knows not a hawk from an handsaw," included on page 37, was used by Shakespeare in his play Hamlet.

He opposed secession, and slavery; he eventually became Governor of Texas.His letter to Lincoln, dated July 28, 1863 shortly after Gettysburg, supports the Emancipation Proclamation. He proclaims slavery an enemy of the nation, and states that former slaves are " ... capable of being made allies in the common cause of freedom, justice, and humanity."
