Paris: Blaizot, 1911. Hardcover. Very good. Small quarto. 109 pp, profusely illustrated with etchings by Octave Denis Victor Guillonnet. In a fine Riviere binding of crushed red morocco decorated in gilt, top and fore edges gilt, marbled endpapers, spine in six compartments. One shallow scratch on front board, some rubbing to edges and joints (where it appears at one time an attempt was made to restore color to the rubbed area); still a lovely copy, with original wrappers bound in. L'Arlésienne was first published as a play and first performed in 1872. This first illustrated edition and was limited to 278 copies, of which this is number 125.

H. Piazza & Cie: Paris. Hardcover. Very good. Undated, ca. 1908. 146 pp + 40 tipped-in color plates and two-page table of plates. Bound in three-quarter leather with gilt lettering on spine, top edge gilt, with original paper wrappers bound in. Leather scuffed, particularly at corners, internally sound and clean. Tale adapted from The Tempest.

L, 321 pp, with portraits, facsimiles, and a map, in original two-tone full-leather binding. Corners and bottom edges scuffed, pages toned, subtle ex-library indications, else clean and sound. The first 50 pages are an essay by J. Sanchez Garza, the remainder prints the text of a manuscript titled "Resena y diario de la Campana de Texas, por Jose Enrique de la Pena. Matamoros, Tamps. Septiembre 15 de 1836." José Enrique de la Peña 9c. 1807-1841) was a lieutenant colonel in the Mexican navy and participant in the battle of the Alamo. Paris and Mexico: Librería de la Vda. de C. Bouret, 1912. Softcover. Good. 10" x 13", [4], 40 pp., with colored folding map, 6 maps in text, and many illustrations from photographs. Wrappers have considerable chipping to the edges, first few pages show wear at fore edge, internals clean, with some general handling wear. A good copy of this detailed and well illustrated survey of the geography, climate, and natural resources of Baja California in the early twentieth century. Léon Diguet (1859-1926) was a French naturalist, ethnographer, explorer, and chemical engineer who first went to Mexico in 1889 in the employ of a French-owned copper mining company operating in Santa Rosalia, Baja California Sur. Slight soiling to top edge of text block, else a fine copy, in a very good dust jacket with light wear to the top edge. Louis Waldman (1892-1982) was "a leading figure in the Socialist Party of America from the late 1910s and through the middle 1930s, a founding member of the Social Democratic Federation, and a prominent New York labor lawyer" (wiki). This autobiography offers, according to the dust jacket, "an insider's view of labor and socialist affairs by one who played a leading role in their making," with Waldman's life mirroring "the growth, development, and ideological conflicts of American Labor and third-party political life.

Dust jacket has internal tape reinforcements and is chipped at corners and spine ends with a small loss along the front joint. Lady Stanhope (1776-1839) was a rather eccentric British aristocrat who grew bored with life at home and began traveling in 1810. She spent a few months in Malta, then a year in Constantinople, before moving on to tour Syria and the Holy Land. "She travelled in style, made lavish gifts to pashas and others in authority, and arrogated to herself the right to do very much as she pleased. She was warned that when she reached 'fanatical' Damascus she must wear a veil and conform to convention in other ways, but this she refused to do. Author's edition, "with all his introductions, various readings, and the editor's notes." 375 pp + extensive publisher's catalogue illustrated with many engravings from drawings by Birket Foster and John Gildert, as well as 11 original albumen photographs. A good copy bound in original blue cloth decorated in black and gilt, with all edges gilt. Mild spine slant, corners rubbed, scuff mark on rear board. Paper split over hinges; hinges sound but appear to have been re-glued. Early owner's name and date on verso of front free endpaper.

Softcover. Very good. Title continues. "Address of Henry W. Lee. C.E., consulting engineer, Greater Chicago Federation, before U.S. Engineers, January 13, 1913. Offprint from the Calumet Record, Jan. 16, 1913.  14 pp, stapled wrappers. Light creasing, a little soiling to front cover; very good. A contribution to the decades-long battle over the most fitting use of Chicago's lakefront. Lee argues that the 1909 Chicago Plan (or Burnham Plan) allows for two million dollars of public funds intended for small parks to be given to the Illinois Central Railroad "in exchange for nothing." Includes a nice review of the value of Lake Michigan to the city and of urban harbors generally.

Undated, likely mid-1970s. 34 x 25-inch map showing hundreds of small lots for sale in this subdivision in Weed, near Mount Shasta in Siskyou County. Folding creases, one split along a fold, a few minor notations; very good. Development at Lake Shastina began in 1968 and focused on enticing well-heeled city dwellers in the Bay Area and Los Angeles to purchase lots for investment, second homes, or retirement. Lots were initially offered at $5,000, and the developer, Golden West Associates, offered free rountrip flights for potential buyers to see the proprety. In a 2009 interview upon his retirement, the long-time general manager of the development recalled, "We couldn't sub-divide fast enough to keep up with sales. In the early '70s lots were selling for $17,000 to $25,000. The sales people could sell $2 million a weekend in real estate." Today, the community is home to about 2,700 people, but some of the lots shown on this ambitious sales map remain empty.

Spine cloth faded, small water stain on front board; internally sound and clean. No dust jacket. Inscribed on the half title page "To Cadet Stanley Payson Blish, Sincerely yours, Hassoldt Davis." A well written account of Davis's travels with documentary filmmakers Armand Denis and Leila Roosevelt.

Very good. 24" x 17" engraving by Hezekiah Wright Smith (1828-1889) after a painting by Thomas Hicks (1823-1890), matted and mounted on cardboard backing (total dimensions 26.5" x 19"). Printed below image on left: Painted by T. Hicks. N. A.", and on right: "Engraved by H. Wright Smith." Dated to 1859 based on cataloged examples at the Library of Congress and Mount Vernon Museum. Scattered foxing (relatively subtle), but still a very good example, suitable for display. Washington is portrayed in military dress, standing in front of Mount Vernon with a walking stick in his right hand. 11" x 14" photograph showing members of the American Samoan Delegation--headed by famed Machu PIcchu explorer Hiram Bingham--being received by local chiefs, as a Samoan man films the proceedings. A slightly different version of this image (with the Samoan photographer removed) was published in a 1931 U.S. Government report with the caption "County Chiefs Leiato of Fagaitua and Faumunia of Aunuu Entertain Commission at Fagaitua." The Delegation, which also included Rep. Guinn Williams, Sen. Joseph T. Robinson, and Rep. Carroll L. Beedy, was there to hear the grievances of Samoans living under U.S. Naval Administration governance and to determine whether to make changes to American policy and procedures. Photographer Merl LaVoy (1886-1953) was present as a cameraman for British newsreel producer Pathé News. London: Smith, Elder & Co, 1877. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. pp xxxii, 228, in publisher's mauve cloth ruled in black, with gilt insignia on upper board. Mild rubbing to spine ends, corners lightly bumped, some faint staining to rear board, closed tear to half-title, with tiny archival tape reinforcement on verso. Inscribed on the half title page "Frederic Harrison from Matthew Arnold 1877," apparently in Harrison's hand. The same page also has a bookplate we have not identified, and "With kind regards--" written at the top in a different ink, possibly in Arnold's hand. Harrison (1831-1923) was a British legal scholar, historian, and occasional critic of Arnold's ideas on culture. He published an essay on Arnold in his book Tennyson, Ruskin, Mill, and Other Literary Estimates (London, 1899).
