Adams was born to Nathaniel Dickinson Adams and Harriet (Hastings) Adams in Shutesbury, Massachusetts. On his mother's side, he was a descendant of Thomas Hastings who came from the East Anglia region of England to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1634.[1] Adams received his early training in the Amherst, Massachusetts public schools and Phillips Exeter Academy. He graduated from Amherst College in 1872. In 1873 Adams traveled to Europe to study and write. In 1874 he then moved to Heidelberg, Germany to pursue the Ph.D. degree. There he was influenced by Johann Gustav Droysen and Johann Kaspar Bluntschli, the latter also becoming his mentor. Heidelberg did not then require a thesis from its doctoral candidates, instead it required an oral examination, for which he chose political science for his major field (Hauptfach), with two minors… Read More

Les Petites misères de la guerre, engraved frontispiece and 6 engraved plates, wide margins, browning and occasional offsetting, nineteenth century crimson straight-grain Morocco gilt, some light wear [Lieure 1333-1338; Meaume 557-563], oblong 12mo (129 x 170mm.), Paris, Israel Henriet, 1636.
Jacques Callot (French; c. 1592 – 1635) was a baroque printmaker and draftsman from the Duchy of Lorraine (an independent state on the north-eastern border of France, southwestern border of Germany and overlapping the southern Netherlands). He is an important person in the development of the old master print. He made more than 1,400 etchings that chronicled the life of his period, featuring soldiers, clowns, drunkards, Gypsies, beggars, as well as court life. He also etched many religious and military images, and many prints featured extensive landscapes in their background.
Callot was born and died in Nancy, the capital of Lorraine, now in France. He came from an important family (his father was master of… Read More

Besongne, rue Ecuyere, au Soleil Royal, 1715
Bartolommeo Cambi da Saluzz O.F.M.Recol., 1557-1617; Jean Besongne was mostly a publisher of religious works and government documents. Apparently obtaining the type set of an older printing house, he recast the earlier 1616 edition.
Duodecimo, 5.75 x 3.25 in. A12, A-Q12. This copy is fairly good condition internally. It is bound in contemporary limp parchment. The bookplate of the Maison des Oiseaux is pasted inside the front cover. A rare and difficult work to find as the subject, author remain obscure. Typeset and engravings hark back to the 17th century, suggesting that the printer did not have the… Read More
