This was Abdulrazak Gurnah's eighth novel, and centers on an east African immigrant named Abbas, who has raised a family in England and now reflects on the past he has never told anyone about. A stroke has now rendered him unable to speak about it. <br /> <br /> Gurnah won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2021, "...for his uncompromising and compassionate penetration of the effects of colonialism and the fate of the refugee in the gulf between cultures and continents.".

An account of the tragic loss of the school-ship Albatross in a sudden squall on May 2, 1961. Chuck Gieg was one of the teenaged students on board who survived the incident. Alice Sheldon, who owned and operated the ship with her husband, was lost as were four students and the ship's cook. The Ridley Scott film "White Squall" is based on this incident. <br /> <br /> This copy is inscribed and signed by young Gieg in the year of publication on a sticker that is affixed to the front free endpaper. A rather scarce book.

Three letters from Lord Napier to American attorney James Mandeville Carlisle while Napier was British Minister to the United States in Washington, DC. Two of the letters seek the advice of Carlisle on behalf of Her Majesty's Government regarding individual maritime incidents:<br /> <br /> (1) The letter dated 20 July 1858 at Washington concerns the seizure of the American brig "Panchita" by Her Britannic Majesty's ship "Sappho," on suspicion of the former being engaged in the African slave trade. The "Panchita" was seized some 50 miles up the Congo River, searched, and then returned to New York where she was handed over to authorities. The owners of the "Panchita" firmly denied the slave-trading charges and demanded the arrest of two British officers on board.<br… Read More

A listing of 24 post-roads across various states that were deemed unproductive as of February 20th, 1817. The criteria were that the road had been established for more than two years and that it had not, within the preceding year, produced postal revenue of at least a third of the cost of transporting the mail upon it. <br /> <br /> Congress was given the power to establish specific post roads in Article I Section 8 of the Constitution. Here the Postmaster General reports that some of the roads so established are a waste of taxpayer money. Return J. Meigs, Jr. was appointed Postmaster General in 1814 by President James Madison--a post he would hold until 1823. The present report was submitted to then Speaker of the House of Representatives, Henry Clay.

Channing was a prominent Unitarian clergyman and very much opposed to the annexation of Texas, which he believed would in essence amount to a deliberate spreading of slavery in the nation. An important analysis of ten early editions and piracies of the famous Map of the Middle British Colonies in America, by Welsh surveyor Lewis Evans (c.1700-1756). Henry Stevens, famous Americana bookseller, was prompted on his quest to compare various editions when he purchased a copy of the original Philadelphia edition of 1755. More broad than its specific subject, this interesting and useful bibliographical reference shows various "tricks of the trade and modes of procedure of map makers in the eighteenth century." According to the Preface, only a few copies were printed for presentation and sale. Scarce in commerce.

Perhaps the first book on the Lincoln assassination, originally published about a month after the event. George Alfred Townsend was a pioneering war correspondent during the Civil War, and covered the Lincoln assassination and its aftermath for the New York World. His early dispatches to them were gathered here and published at the start of the trial of the conspirators on May 18, 1865. Interesting booklet on Ray R. Myers, born without arms. Though a circus sought to employ him at age 3, his parents chose to give him as normal a life as they could. He learned to play the trombone and the guitar while in high school. He was discovered by Cowboy Loye and began a career in music. <br /> <br /> Myers did a stint with Robert Ripley and his Odditorium in 1933, but decided against a career as a freak. He seemed able to overcome any obstacle, as photos herein show him driving a car, smoking cigarettes, firing a rifle, and more--all with his feet. <br /> <br /> Myers has signed this copy under the photograph of him, his wife, and young son on the Dedication Page.

A handsome copy.. 18 engraved plates (2 steel, 16 wood). Frederick Douglass's third, final, and most complete autobiography. His earlier books were published prior to the Civil War, while still technically a fugitive slave, and therefore still careful about revealing certain information. Here Douglass includes much more on his early life as a slave and his escape. Likewise, this is his only autobiography to cover the Civil War and its aftermath, including his relations with Presidents Lincoln and Garfield. <br /> <br /> This is a second printing of the first edition, as identified by the extensive list of points in "The Frederick Douglass Papers, Series 2, Vol. 3, Book 1.
