Description:
NY: Film Culture, 1964. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Very Good. First stand-alone edition, having appeared earlier the same year in Film Culture #33 (Summer 1964). Signature-bound in printed blue wraps. Quarto, 10-1/2 x 8-3/8 in. 91pp. SIGNED and inscribed by Kuenstler to Michael Silverton on the front endpaper, where also is written "NY 65" in what appears a different hand-presumably Silverton's. Very good, with fading to spine and along tops of front and rear covers. First book by the iconoclastic New York filmmaker and poet, an assemblage of paired words and word-fragments joined by periods and arranged in paragraph-like blocks of text, which Kuenstler apparently spent a decade compiling, having begun the work in 1952. Hermetic and endlessly allusive, Lens is reminiscent on the one hand of the complex linguistic gaming of Finnegans Wake-puns underpin the structure of the work-and on the other of the more experimental gestures of Language poets such as David Melnick. Description:
Los Angeles: Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, 1967. Soft cover. Near Fine. An overview of the history, effects, identification, and users of the psychedelic drug LSD. Reasonably factual, though clearly produced with cautionary if not alarmist intent. It remains unclear how--or to whom--the Sheriff's Department was disseminating this document; regardless, examples are quite scarce, with Worldcat reporting only four holdings, all of them apparently this 1967 printing, including one at the Library of Congress. Los Angeles: Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, 1967. Reprint: "Revised July 1967" stated on second leaf, with acknowledgement of a 1966 printing in the letter from sheriff Peter J. Pitchess that opens the volume. Side-stapled with blue card cover printed in black, 11 x 8-1/2 in. [3], 18, [1] leaves, printed rectos only; illus. Light fading to front cover edges, else fine.

Description:
NY: Sexology, 1967. Soft cover. Very Good. Single issue of this long-running magazine of human sexuality, notable for the inclusion of the three-page article, "LSD and Sex," a reasonably balanced account of the research, benefits and pitfalls of LSD as an aid to "sexual problems." Penned presumably by the same Marsha Alexander responsible for The Sexual Paradise of LSD, a 1967 mass-market paperback which falls rather decisively in the genre of hippie exploitation. Perfect-bound digest in orange and purple printed wraps, 7.5 x 5.25 in. 142pp. A very good (+) copy, showing mild wear and soiling to wraps, some softening at corners.

Edinburgh: Canongate, 1985. Hardcover. Near Fine/Fine. First thus; limited "definitive" edition. No. 195 of one thousand copies signed and numbered by Gray on the front free endpaper. Octavo (9.5 x 6.5 in.), 560pp., black textured paper boards, gilt-stamped on boards and spine, in dust jacket. Gray's first book, over which he labored intermittently for more than two decades before finally seeing it through to publication in 1981. Something of a cult classic, though increasingly recognized as not only Gray's masterpiece but one of the 20th century's most impressive feats of the imagination. A near fine copy, with a ½ x ¼ in. oval moisture stain to textblock top, light wear at heel of spine, and a smudge of shelf soiling to the bottom tip of textblock. Unclipped "£15" jacket also near fine, with just mild sunning to spine. Quite handsome.

Gray papered boards; black spine titles; dust jacket. [4], 41, [7]pp.; plates. Moderate bumping to base of spine and front bottom tip; mild sunning to edges of boards and jacket. Very good or better in like jacket. Two-page essay by Shuri Kido in Japanese and English; else all text in Japanese. Striking black-and-white portraits of the members and performances of a Japanese sideshow, including little people, fire swallowers, and snake eaters. Misemomo, or freakshows, were a widespread form of popular entertainment during the Edo Period, and survived into the 20th century in the form of circus tent shows, though by the time of this book's publication changing laws and waning public interest had led to their near-extinction. Augusta, GA: Last Harass, 1971. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Very Good. The ninth issue of one of the more notable newspapers associated with the GI Underground Press movement, as produced by US Armed Forces members at Fort Gordon, Georgia. The paper's critical stance towards the Vietnam War, along with its espousal of GI rights, led to its first editor, Dennis Davis, being dishonorably discharged in 1969. This issue with several drug-related articles and sidebars, including an account of a US soldier in Vietnam who fought off the Viet Cong while high on marijuana, a piece suggesting that the US government may be complicit in promoting heroin as a way to suppress Black activism, and an opinion piece linking disillusionment to youth drug use.Augusta, GA: Last Harass, 1971. Unbound newsprint tabloid. [8] pp., illus. Horizontal fold crease; moderate toning; wear and some light cracking/chipping along folds. Good to very good. NY: Farrar, Straus and Company, 1948. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Near Fine/Good. Debut novel by the expatriate American journalist and writer, written at the age of twenty while Smith was serving as an Army typist in occupied Berlin. The plot centers on the romance between a Black American solider and a white German woman, and explores the paradox that a member of the segregated Army might finally be accepted as an equal in a country responsible for the most heinous racial genocide of the century. A significant social protest novel, and arguably the first to examine the racism then rampant in the American Army. First edition. Description:
London: The Bodley Head, 1964. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. First British edition of this book documenting the "explorations among drugs" of the sui generis French poet and visual artist. Michaux (1899-1984) occupies an interesting place in the history of drug literature. He didn't begin his using hallucinogens until well into his 50s, experimented heavily for a decade, and then abandoned the practice abruptly at the recommendation of his doctor. In this uniquely hybrid work, which slips fluidly between prose and poetry, he describes the sensations and thought processes prompted by his use of psilocybin, mescaline, and marijuana, as well as his extrapolations about the relationship between the drug state and mental illness. His writing strikes an effective balance between interiority and clinical detachment, particularly effective at conveying the experiential complexity of the psychedelic state. First British edition. Translated from the French by Haakon Chevalier.… Read More
