London.: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans., 1855. First edition, Two volumes, pp.xii, 451, viii, 423, 24 (adverts). A good set in original green cloth, boards blind decorated. Lightly rubbed, corners bumped, spines bumped and faded. The head and foot of the spine of volume one has a few superficial tears to cloth, and rear inner hinge starting to separate. Previous owner's inscriptions to front end-papers. Ida Laura Pfeiffer (1797– 1858) was arguably the first full-time woman traveller: an adventurous Austrian, she dedicated the second half of her life entirely to travelling around the world, and published five works describing her journeys. This was her penultimate work and the last she would live to see, her final work being published posthumously in 1861. First edition, three volumes, 4to, pp.xxiii, [1], 478, 88 illustrations, 14 maps; 481, [1], errata leaf, 84 illustrations, 10 maps; 818, frontispiece, 59 illustrations, map. This set is heavy and may incur additional shipping charges. A very good set bound in later buckram, leather title labels on spine. Minor spotting to prelims. Etienne Aymonier (1844-1929), a French naval officer, was sent to Cochinchina in 1869. In 1871 he was appointed as one of the first Inspectors of indigenous affairs. He became deeply interested in Cambodian culture, studied the Cambodian language, and promoted the exploration of Khmer sites, particularly Angkor, begun by Delaporte and Harmand. He was appointed Resident at Phnom-Penh, 1879-81. In 1881 was charged with an archaeological mission to unexplored parts of Cambodia. A very good copy bound in contemporary calf, neatly re-backed, all edges red. Boards slightly rubbed and scuffed, end-papers toned, small label fixed to lower board. The first western translation of Qianlong's poem in praise of the capital of the Manchu dynasty, along with a smaller piece on Tea, also by the Emperor, to which is added numerous notes by the translator Amiot on geography, history, and customs to enable the work to be better understood and appreciated by Western readers. Jean Joseph Marie Amiot (1718–1793) was a French Jesuit missionary in Qing China, during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor, becoming a close confidant and official translator for Western languages.
