Description:
1657 Lucius Florus History of Ancient Rome + Ampelius Liber Memorialis Salmasius

"Men of outstanding ability are more likely to lack the power of controlling their own people than of defeating an enemy in battle."
― Livy, The History of Rome

Florus was a Roman historian who lived during the 2nd-century AD. His history of Rome was collected by Livy, and mainly focuses on the foundation of Rome though the end of the B.C. era. The work is considered inaccurate, especially compared to Livy's much more popular and famous History of Rome.

This 1657 Elzevier edition of Florus was edited by the 17th-century French classist Claudius Salmasius. First appearing in 1638, this book not only includes Florus but also an edition of Lucius Ampelius's 'Liber Memorialis'. This work is an ancient index of 1st-century Roman history focusing on cosmography, mythology, and geography during the Republican period of Rome. Curiously, this is only the second known edition of Ampelius.

1827 DANTE Divine Comedy PISA Italy Accademia Crusca Inferno Purgatory Italian
Few works throughout the history of all written history have had such an impact on the readership of humanity. The Divine Comedy is Dante's record of an allegorical journey through the spiritual realms of Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise. This medieval classic depicts Classical themes, Christian history, and Medieval politics. It has been the inspiration for countless plays, art, books, pieces of music, movies, and more!
This 1827 edition of 'Divine Comedy' is notable for containing an extensive commentary by, as the title suggests, a 'contemporary of Dante'. And while the commentary's author is unknown, this particular issue was collected and edited by the Accademia della Crusca – one of the most prestigious and well-recognized institutions of the Italian language.

1768 Albertus Magnus Secret Medicine Health Alchemy Farming Alletz Modern Albert
In 1760, Pons Augustin Alletz published one the best and most popular manuals on country life. 'The Agronomist',
or 'l'Albert Moderne', was a highly desirable book of advice on gardening, animal breeding, veterinary medicine, hunting, and cooking recipes. The most important, and most oft-read section was that on wine and wine making. This section also tells of the health benefits of wine as well as the healing properties and aromatics and vinegar.
The title of this edition suggests the influence of Albert, or Albertus Magnus, a medieval friar who became well-known for his writings of secrets of the world on alchemy, astronomy, physiology, theology, and much, much more. Alletz sought to gain prominence by featuring the name of a well-respected mind in the title of his book.

Description:
1757 Praise of Folly Erasmus of Rotterdam Protestant Reform Illustrated Humanism

"When I have a little money, I buy books; and if I have any left, I buy food and clothes."
― Erasmus

In 1509, Erasmus composed his famous essay 'In Praise of Folly' which was a satirical attack on superstitions and other unconventional traditions in European society. Since its inception in the early 16th-century, it is considered one of the most important works of the Renaissance and helped develop early stages of the Protestant Reformation.

Erasmus uses satire to examine doctrine and corruption within the Catholic Church, even though Erasmus was devoted deeply to Catholicism. He concludes 'In Praise of Folly' with statements of supporting Christian Protestantism. He frequently references Greek mythological creatures and figures.

This 18th-century printing an important French edition, translated out of the original Latin by Gueudeville with notes.

1664 Lesina Company Italian Politics Cuisine Finance Venice Canterbury Tales

In 16th-century Florence, there was a rise a style of literature that focused heavily on political satire. One such work was 'Company of the Lesina Dialogues'. This work of unknown authorship describes a group of travelers on the way to Lesina and their conversations. It covers a wide variety of topics including food and recipes, as well as money and finance – things the group sought upon arriving at their destination. This work, which was published throughout the 17th-century, has been attributed to Tommaso Buoni.

While there are no exact connections between the two, the parallels between 'Lesina' and Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales' are evident. Fictional travelers discussing life on their way to a destination.
