Description:
Near fine: a couple of very minor scratches on spine, a little fraying at head of spine, slipcase shows a little shelf wear. Interior of volume and front and back boards are pristine. This volume was a personal gift from Rainier III, Prince of Monaco (1923 - 2005) to the eminent medievalist Kenneth M. Setton (1914 – 1995) on the occasion of a visit by Prince Rainier and Princess Grace to her hometown of Philadelphia in the 1960's. (Professor Setton was at the time Director of Libraries at the University of Pennsylvania.) Bound into the volume is the prince's card, with a note in his handwriting to professor Setton. This is a deluxe binding on heavy hand-laid paper with deckled edges and gilt page tops. It is one of a limited number of copies; this copy however is not numbered, apparently because it came from the royal family. It appears to be similar to the 400 Papeteries du Marais exemplars as the pages do not bear the watermarked arms of the Grimaldi family. This edition was published on 11… Read More

Description:
Text is first edition, one of 500 copies on laid rag paper ("papier d'Hollande" - copy # not filled in), binding probably not contemporary, Very good condition, with a little foxing, particularly in first part of volume. Includes all eight of the chansons. The famous chanson de geste in 9000 lines, known in a version of a lost original composed about 1180 and attributed to Richard le Pèlerin, a pilgrim who was on the spot and began composition during the siege of Antioch, inspired by the events of 1097–99. The climax of the First Crusade, the conquest of Antioch and Jerusalem, laid the foundations of the Crusader states. The Chanson was elaborated and to a degree mythologized and became part of the Crusader cycle of romances popular in the 14th century.
The Chanson was pretty much forgotten until it was printed and published in 1848 (during the Gothic Revival) by the French scholar and medievalist Alexis Paulin Paris (1800-1881), the first holder of the chair of Medieval literature at the Collège… Read More

Description:
578 pages, marbled end-papers. A number of scuff marks, corners bumped and a little foxing here and there, but otherwise a tight clean copy with no tears or damage; interior of book in very good condition, with a few pencil marks, including owner's name. First edition of Lepsius's (1810-1884) famous and (very readable in translation by the Horner sisters) account of the 1842-45 expedition which arguably laid the foundation for virtually all serious subsequent Egyptological study. Lepsius, a highly accomplished Prussian, was the first professional, serious scholar to study the antiquities of Egypt, travelling from Thebes to Khartoum, discovering the Decree of Canopus, adding significantly to the understanding of hieroglyphics, and producing a compendium of Egyptian antiquities which is still valuable today. These letters were written to give a more general audience access to the excitement and adventure of discovery and a sense of what it meant to travel the Nile.

Stephen argued for an ordered freedom through some forms of compulsion or restraint, and that without these, civilized society would be impossible. This is the second edition, with Stephen's long Preface, occasioned, as he… Read More
