Melville William Hilton-Simpson (1881-1938) was a British traveler, anthopologist and ethnologist. His expedition to the Congo in 1907-09 was undertaken with the support of the British Museum.

Moderate staining and wear to covers, a few minor stains internally, but about very good for this fragile set. . 4 volumes, original printed wrappers, 12 mo (4.5 x 6.75 inches), (xxxvi), 105; 131; 90; 98 pp. The "Mricchakatika" - in English "The Little Clay Cart" is attributed to the classical Indian dramatist Sudraka, of whom very little is known. In the play itself, he is identified as a king, who lived for over one hundred years. The principal characters of the play are Carudatta, a penniless Brahmin; Vasantasena, a wealthy courtesan; and the brahmin thief Carvilaka.

A wealth of images of Italian architecture, architectural ornament, fountains, statuary, etc. The previous owner of this book was John Branner Newsom (1897-1988), son of Stanford Geology Professor John F. Newsom. In 1923-24 Newsom, Jr. built a small house in Palo Alto at 758 Everett Avenue. Perhaps some ideas for finishing touches were found in this book!

A fairly early work by the prolific French artist and illustrator.

The short-lived French colony at Champ d'Asile on the Trinity River near what is now the area of greater metropolitan Houston, Texas, was founded in 1818 by a group of French veterans of the Napoleonic wars. "Fictionalized, but reasonably authentic, account of the French settlement at Champ d'Asile" (Howes R479). The first edition was published in 1858, the second in 1860. All are scarce: OCLC/Worldcat locates only 2 copies of the 1858 edition, 3 of the 1860, and 5 of the 1862 editions.
