Description:
New York, 1850. Beautiful painted trade sign, 11 7/8 x 14 inches, watercolor and gouache in gold, black, and several shades of blue, with some remaining traces of pencil outlining, all enclosed within an embossed gilt border. Signed by the artist in lower corner: "I. L. Lazarus / 179 Broadway, N.Y." According to an ad in the Geneva newspaper, May 22, 1847, Newell would be using a newly developed "Letheon Vapor" as an anesthetic; Newell was still practicing at this address in 1860 ( from the "Vulcanite: A Quarterly Journal Devoted to the Science of Mechanical Dentistry"). The 1848 New York City Directory identifies I. L. Lazarus, "manufacturer of ornamental show cards, and importer of lever watches, &c." at "179 Broadway (up stairs)." A beautiful trade sign for a provincial dentist. Glazed and in an old frame. (11170).

Description:
Bouillon, (France: n.p., 1774. Third edition. Small 8vo. Two parts bound together: 166 (lacks half-title); 132 pp. Castilhon's account of the reign of Zinga, Queen of Angola in the 17th century, was originally published in 1769 under a slightly less lurid title, "Zingha, Reine D'Angola" [her name has been spelled in various ways since her reign], with a second edition in 1770. This edition is apparently the first version of her highly colorful biography to appear under this title; in the preface, Castilhon acknowledges the sources for his work, including a Capuchin monk, Antoine de Gaete, who was a missionary in Angloa during the time of Zinga's rule. Zinga (ca. 1583-1663) ruled Ndongo (later Angola) for forty years; she is characterized as clever, powerful, diplomatic, and adept at dealing with foreign powers. At a chaotic time for the continent of Africa, when European powers were fighting for control of both territory and the slave trade, she navigated military and political pathways to strengthen…

NP, 1943. Two volumes bound in red morocco, gilt decorated spines, boards panelled in gilt floral designs. 22 cm. 67; 90 pp. A specially bound typescript in Spanish, rectos only, of Ardavin's [unpublished?] play "La Hija Que Yo Mate," ["The Daughter I Killed"]. A bit of wear to spine ends, some darkening to leather, else a very nice set. Small bookseller's sticker on verso of front endpaper. Inscribed in the first volume by Ardavin to Capt. R. D[race] White, whose name is stamped in gilt on the front boards of both volumes. Ardavin's inscription to White, dated 14 April 1943, references their enjoyable travel amongst the ruins of Italy. Luis Fernandez Ardavin was a Spanish playwright, poet, librettist and translator. He was also a film scriptwriter, often collaborating with his brother, the director Eusebio Fernandez Ardavin. One of his most successful plays, "The Lady with an Ermine," (1922) was made into a film in 1947. Capt. R. Drace White was likely the 1899 U.S. Naval Academy graduate who served…
