Van Dyck became the leading court painter in England, best known for portraits of the aristocracy, most notably Charles I, his family and associates. Limited edition, copy 61 of 250 on Arches, with an original drawing of Cupid on the half title signed and inscribed by Vertes, and by Hesse -- both to Lucien Bonn. Eleven full page color lithographs by Vertes. The author, a bibliophile, and a lawyer by profession. Vertes, born in Hungary achieved success in Paris during the 1920's: he worked for the satirical magazine, "Rire" and "Gazette Du Bon Ton." His portrayals of women and scenes of Paris street life were arch. Interior contents very fresh, bright and clean, only flaw, slight toning lower portion of front cover.

Limited edition, copy 56 of 120, signed by Paul Valery and Raphael Drouart. This copy dedicated to M.R. Delaine. Rouart was proficient in all the printmaking techniques; etching, engraving, mezzotint, relief and lithography. He worked as a collaborating illustrator for many authors throughout the 1920s -- in 1925 he did aquatints for a livre d' artiste Le Cantique Des Cantiques and 20 wood engravings for Rene Boyleve's Le Meillieur Ami. Art Deco binding by Jacques Anthoine-Legrain, stepson and assistant to Pierre Legrain. The text develops a dialogue and philosophical interpretations of Socrate, Phedre, and Eryximaque as they view a dance performance at a banquet. Covers decorated in ruled gilt and blind, and in pointelles, inner gilt dentelles with gray silk moire endpapers plus original wrappers are bound-in.

Illustrated with 25 full-page etchings (including text leaves and the title-page) printed recto only. The gossamer quality of his etchings stood in contrast to the thickly painted surfaces and generally somber color of his oil paintings, which reflected his admiration for Courbet and Cézanne. Segonzac's work is held in the permanent collections of several museums worldwide, including the British Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The play staged Théâtre Grand Guignol, March 3, 1923. Publisher's original glassine and vellum wrappers, paper wrappers, in loose gatherings as issued creasing to glassine, slight soiling to inner wrapper, rear outer wrapper creased at upper corner.
