Description:
Paris: A.G. Mornay, 1928. First thus. Near Fine. Exemplaire No. 656. Original publisher's pictorial wraps, measuring 200 x 150mm and illustrated throughout. A lovely example, with minor creasing to spine and gentle wear to spine ends. Internally bright, pleasing and fresh. Henri de Renier's first novel is an examination of gender and class dynamics. A mother terrorizes and controls her son; one cousin tries to seduce another; and a forward courtesan and a libertine run rampant. The present example is a visual triumph, as colorful as its characters. A leader in the Ecole des Beaux Arts, the illustrator Barbier brought his own flamboyant personal style to his artwork, resulting in a sense of vibrancy and movement. Near Fine.

Scarce institutionally and in trade, OCLC reports holdings at only 8 U.S. libraries and the present is the only copy on the market. After decades of lobbying, the women of Great Britain gained several key legal victories in the form of the Married Women's Property Acts (1870-1893). Across the four acts were measures that broke down the English Common Law structure that subsumed married women's legal and social identities under their husbands' through coverture for centuries. New York [San Francisco]: Random House (Grabhorn Press), 1930. First thus. Very Good +. Illustrated by Valenti Angelo. Printed by the Grabhorn Press (of San Francisco) in an edition of 400 copies, this number 133. Internal contents generally clean and in excellent condition with just the odd page with a bit of foxing. With an original, signed letter from Bennett A. Cerf of Random House describing the binding for the original owner (and directing his inquiry about the paperstock to Ed Grabhorn). Perhaps the most important collection of poetry in American Literature. Although Leaves of Grass was first greeted with derision and even shock - Boston's district attorney attempted to have some of the poems suppressed as obscene and Whitman was fired from his job - it eventually claimed its rightful place in the American canon. Whitman wrote the collection after he was… Read More

London: Longman, Brown, Green, & Longmans, 1847. First edition. Fine. Recent green paper wrappers. Collates [4], 51 pages: complete. Pages hand numbered in upper right hand corners; minor marginal annotations on pages 37 and 46. Overall, an exceptionally clean and pleasing copy of this rare educational tract, which argued for widespread education as the best method of attaining social equality. A scarce work, the present copy is the only one on the market, with OCLC reporting 2 copies in the UK and none in the US. "We will never learn to reason well by merely following the reason of others," Dodd begins his lecture. In what follows, he outlines the important of providing children -- both boys and girls, both wealthy and impoverished -- with access to a wide range of rigorous topics which will develop their logical skills. As students make their way through studies in astronomy, chemistry, algebra, and geometry, to these should be added learning in the classic languages and literatures. Dodd asserts… Read More

London: George G. Harrap & Co., Ltd, 1928. First trade edition. Quarto (9 13/16 x 7 1/2 inches; 250 x 191 mm.). Collating 102, [1], [1, blank]. Publisher's green cloth pictorially stamped in gilt on front cover and lettered in gilt on spine. Top edge gilt, others uncut. Pictorial endpapers. Eight color plates and thirty drawings in black and white. A Near Fine copy in a VG+ original color pictorial dust jacket with just some chipping and loss to the spine extremities and edges. By 1928, the traditional Rackham book - freely and lavishly illustrated, and lushly produced - was, culturally no longer in fashion nor financially feasible. Artistically, Rackham's work was being overshadowed by a younger generation. Publisher George Harrap stepped in, took up the challenge, and, through production economies, published a new kind of Rackham book. But if the volumes were not as spectacular as in the past, the artwork was no less impressive. Latimore and Haskell 63-64. Riall 164-165.

Paris: A & G Mornay, 1930. First thus. Very Good. Exemplaire N. LXXV printed on Papier de Rives. Original publisher's pictorial wrappers, measuring 200 x 150mm and illustrated throughout. A pleasing example, with a bit of wear to wraps; some browning externally and scattered foxing internally. Some cracking to the spine and along the front joint. Largely known for his poetry, Henri de Regnier shifted toward writing realistic novels and tales in his later career. The present, beautifully illustrated by Barbier, infuses rich color and movement into the narrative. A leader in the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Barbier brought his own flamboyant personal style to his artwork, resulting in a sense of vibrancy and movement. Very Good.

Description:
Boston: Redding and Company, 1855. First edition. Fine. 91 pages. Disbound but with contents holding tight. All edges speckled. Internally a tight, unmarked, and fresh copy with none of the toning found in imprints of this period. Chickering's important argument on the illegality of slavery in the U.S. last appeared at auction in 1976, and has become scarce both institutionally and in the trade. A political economist with a degree from Harvard, Chickering committed his published works to the study of immigration, slavery, and race in the young nation. His Letter Addressed to the President is an outlined legal argument about the illegality of slavery in the U.S., based both upon its adoption and reliance on British Common Law precedents as well as on the U.S.'s own Constitution. He further argues that in a nation where sovereignty is derived from the people, that the expansion of that people to include everyone leads to improvements for all citizens. "Those who have been clothed with power are… Read More
