Description:
NP (La Crosse, WI): Art Publishing Company., 1887. First Edition. Rare. OCLC cites ONLY four copies of the original edition. Published in eight individual parts. With a total of 54 photogravures, most full page of La Crosse and surrounding area. 4to, bound in the original stiff printed staple wrappers. A fine set of the photographs and text-blocks, some edge wear to the covers, four covers detached, but a rare and elusive work. FIRST EDITION, RARE EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY OF LA CROSSE, WISCONSIN. No photographic credits are given, but the quality is excellent, with shots of downtown streets with people congregating. The printed text describes places photographed. They are exquisitely crisp, 19th century, artistic, black and white photographs that showcase picturesque views. Many of these sites have changed physically since these were taken, so these photos document an earlier environment.

New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1977. First Edition, First Printing. 8vo, publisher’s original tangerine cloth lettered in gilt, in the original dustjacket. 257 pp. The book is quite fine, the jacket has a touch of minor age evidence. FIRST EDITION OF THIS CLASSIC OF MODERN SOUTHERN LITERATURE. It tells the story of the dejected lawyer Lancelot Lamar, who murders his wife after discovering that he is not the father of her youngest daughter. He ends up in a mental institution, where his story is told through his reflections on his disturbing past. The novel compares the protagonist unfavorably to his namesake, Sir Lancelot, as he experiences a vision of an empty modern American culture which invokes the symbolism of the mythical Wasteland.

Description:
London: John Murray, for the Royal Geographical Society, 1873. First edition. One large folding map. 8vo, original royal blue cloth with gilt lettering on spine. vii, 271. A very good copy, the spine showing some mild darkening, but not unpleasantly so. Also includes "Journey of the Pombeiros: P. J. Battista and Amaro José, Across Africa From Angola to Tette on the Zambeze," translated by B. A. Beadle; and "Résumé of the Journey of M. M. Monteiro and Gamitto" by Dr. C. T. Beke. The RGS published these early accounts of Portuguese journeys into the African interior in the wake of increased interest in African exploration due to Livingstone's travels. According to Penzer, Burton had also written two appendices which were rejected by the RGS due to their controversial nature. In Penzer's time, as he mentions, original printings of the book were still available from the RGS, though of course now the book is rather uncommon. There was only one edition of this book.

And so, he began the writing of his “Leather Stocking” series of which LAST OF THE MOHICANS is the second book after the introduction of Natty Bumppo in THE DEERSLAYER but the most famous of all the titles in the group and the “first in which the scout...was made the symbol of all that was wise, heroic and… Read More
