The ten reproductions of the original charcoal drawings in this portfolio are all signed in the plate and each measures 42 x 32 cm. on stiff card. The text is in Spanish and English, and the subject of each plate is identified. The stiff card folder shows wear and some soiling. The pages are thumbed at the corners, last pages show faint tide mark across the bottom margin, miniscule amount of staining to the bottom margin of four plates, minor edgewear. Only 300 copies of this portfolio were produced - our copy is designated no. 151. Calderon was a Mexican artist from Toluca. In 1963 he visited the publisher and art critic Paul Westheim in Mexico City, and showed him ten charcoal drawings of the Lacandon tribe of Mayan Indians, which he had drawn seven years earlier during a visit to Bonampak as an artist member of a private expedition organized in cooperation with the Mexican National Institute of Anthropology and History.

London: Wm. Strahan, 1777. 1st printing. Engraving by William Hodges. An original copper engraving from a painting by William Hodges,Taken from Hawkesworth's 1773 account of the voyages of Capt. James Cook, Joseph Banks, and Capt John Byron. Hodges (1744-1797) joined Cook's second expedition to the South Pacific (1772-1775) as a draughstman. Cook visited Vanuatu in July of 1774. In his judgment the islanders - the Malekulans - were 'the most ugly and ill-proportioned people' he ever saw. Hawkesworth commented that they wore no clothes, except a piece of cloth or leaf by which the men tied their penis to their belly. They had wooly, short-cropped hair, thick lips, and very dark complexions, and the septum was perforated by a sharp stone. The spine is in compartments, blocked in gilt, with a morocco spine label. The binding is signed 'J. B. Hawes, Cambridge'. The contents are exceptionally bright and quite unmarked. There is a small abrasion near the base of the spine, and the board edges show a trace of rubbing. There is small, one inch, black mark to the rear board, and some very light general scuffing to the boards. The hinges and joints are tight. Overall, in very good condition, and most handsome in appearance. This is the eighteenth edition, bound as a prize binding with crests embossed in gilt on the front and rear boards.
