Marnie Powers-Torrey: "Edition of 32, the age of the artist when she became pregnant and gave birth to her second child, realizing that she'd never be the same again. "Work on this book began in 2006 in a workshop with the brilliant Julie Leonard, just after the birth of the artist's third and last child. Portland, Maine:: Rebecca Goodale,, 2001.. Edition of 10. 9.625 x 9.5 x .75"; 4 leaves. Silkscreen printed accordion onto which are tipped handcut inkjet-printed butterflies. Clothbound portfolio case closed with an elastic band. Linda J. Docherty, Catalog of the Exhibition: Threatened and Endangered: Artists' Books Created by Rebecca Goodale, 2004: "Four Maine Butterflies illuminates the fragile beauty of the natural world. It invites contemplations of differences among insects that appear, at first glance, similar. Goodale shows the intricate silhouettes and subtle markings that distinguish Edwards' hairstrea, Clayton's copper, hessel's hairstreak, and Katahdin Arctic. The butterfly forms are cut out and placed on decorative backgrounds inspired by their individual host plants. In the history of art, the butterfly symbolizes resurrection, and Goodale captures this hopeful quality. The insects pop up and hover over the pages, vibrating with life despite their endangered status.

Midway through the book, there is a switch: the text is printed in reverse on the verso, but shows through in proper order on the preceding recto. Many-Fur (Allerleirau in German) was one of the fairy tales collected by the Brothers Grimm. Perrault collected a similar story known as Donkeyskin (Peau d'Ane in French.) As it involves incest, it has fallen out of modern collections for children. Lise Melhorn-Boe: "Because it is a less-well-known fairy tale, probably because of the implied incest, I chose to actually include the entire story as the text, rather than using words and phrases from the women's magazines as I did with the other four fairy tales."
