Description:
Philadelphia: E. C. Biddle, 1837. Hand-coloured lithograph. A fine image from McKenney and Hall's 'Indian Tribes of North America': `One of the most important [works] ever published on the American Indians' (Field),` a landmark in American culture' (Horan) and an invaluable contemporary record of a vanished way of life. Ma-Has-Kah or White Cloud, (1784-1834) an Iowa chief, rose to prominence in his tribe through acts of revenge against the Dakota who had killed his father. Later, he settled down to a life of farming with his wives. Mahaska accepted the white man's code of behavior to the extent that when a fellow Iowa was murdered by some Omaha warriors, Mahaska refused to authorize an attack. When some of his braves struck anyway and killed six Omaha, Mahaska assisted in their arrest. A year later one of the warriors arrested escaped from prison and murdered him. Mahaska visited Washington in 1824 with all seven of his wives and met President Monroe. The portrait by Charles Bird King after which… Read More

Description:
Original watercolour. Artist's inscription on the lower margin. A fine work by one of the most exceptional living practitioner of avian artistry Elizabeth Butterworth, a British artist of exceptional talent, has ventured into the realm of artistic excellence with her exquisite portrayal of Macaws' resplendent plumage. While she follows in the footsteps of acclaimed artists like Edward Lear, Butterworth undeniably stands out as one of the foremost artistic geniuses of our time. Her success can be attributed to her keen observation and an encyclopedic knowledge of her subject matter. From breeding and caring for Macaws to attentively witnessing their lively antics from daybreak to dusk, she has immersed herself in their world. Whether sketching these captivating creatures in the privacy of her own lush garden or capturing their natural beauty in the rainforests of South America, Butterworth's artistic journey has been nothing short of enchanting. Her passion for perfection has led her to meticulously… Read More

Description:
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1879. Colour printed lithograph on later mount. Image: 14 1/8 x 20 1/2 inches; mount: :20 x 26 3/4 inches. Among the finest 19th century images of American sporting fish Samuel A. Kilbourne, a native of Bridgetown, Maine, was an accomplished painter of natural history subjects when he decided, in 1858, to specialize in painting fish. He was extremely successful and, as the plates in this work testify, very proficient in his work. The Game Fishes... was his greatest accomplishment, and has been described as having 'the most beautiful fish plates published in this country' (Bennett). A reviewer writing in The Century magazine in 1882 wrote of Kilbourne's depictions: "Mr. Kilbourne has succeeded in a difficult task. He has succeeded in uniting in his delineation the accuracy in details of form and coloring required by the naturalist, with that freedom of style, delicacy of handling, and naturalness of surroundings demanded by the artist." The images are landscape… Read More

Description:
[Leipzig: Schmidt and Guenther, 1922. Aquatint engraving by Ch. Vogel after Bodmer. From the scarce Leipzig edition printed from the original copper-plates. Limited in number, the prints from the Leipzig edition are more scarce than, and compare favorably to, the first edition. (David C. Hunt, "Karl Bodmer and the American Frontier," Imprint/Spring 85, p.18) This spiritually charged scene of great ritualistic significance to the Assiniboin (or Stoney) Indians was painted by Bodmer during the summer of 1833, near Fort Union at the junction of the Missouri and the Yellowstone rivers. The image of a cairn, erected by the tribe and surmounted by a carefully placed Buffalo skull, encapsulates the importance of the animal to the nomadic Plains Indians. To the Assiniboin the buffalo was an essential of life. Other animals were hunted, but only the buffalo provided the bulk of their food and the hide and bone with which to fashion shelter, clothing and tools. Prince Maximilian described the cairn as a… Read More

Description:
Washington D.C.: Published by the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey, 1917. Large folding nautical chart, printed on heavy paper stock. Colored. A rare original coastal survey of Charlotte Harbor including Boca Grande and the Charlotte Harbor estuary, Florida's second largest estuary and fabled home of mythical pirate Jose Gaspar during Florida's second Spanish period. Established by President Thomas Jefferson in 1807 as the Survey of the Coast, the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey was the United States' first civilian scientific agency. This agency has followed its mission to survey the U.S. coastline, create nautical charts of the coast, and help increase maritime safety since its founding, and has often played fascinating roles in significant chapters of U.S. history. It served in all theaters of the Civil War in the service of the Union Army and Navy, pioneered acoustic exploration in the wake of the sinking of the Titanic, and during WWI it worked to detect enemy submarines. New York, 1861. Engraving. Plate mark: 25 x 18 1/2 inches. Minor foxing. Large format Civil War portrait of McClellan. Scarce first state; after McClellan was dismissed by Lincoln from command of the Army the plate was changed to "Late Maj. Gen..." This impressive portrait of McClellan on horseback, evidently rushed to publication soon after he became the commanding officer of the Union Army in November 1861, was actually a reworking if an 1852 portrait of Franklin Pierce depicting his service in the Mexican War, with McClellan's face superimposed on Pierce's body. See Milton Kaplan, "Heads of State" in Winterthur Portfolio 6: 1970: 135-44.

London: Published by Robt. Sayer, 53 Fleet Street, 1787. Mezzotint. Printed on laid paper. In excellent condition with the exception of two skillfully mended tears in upper margin outside the platemark. Image size: 9 1/4 x 13 3/4 inches. This is a lovely rich impression of this hunting scene which perfectly demonstrates Seymour's artistry and Burford's skill as an engraver. James Seymour is recognized as one of the earliest English sporting artists. He was the son of a wealthy goldsmith and diamond merchant who supplied the plate for racing trophies. His father was also an amateur artist and a member of the Virtuosi Club of St. Luke, a gentleman's club for artists and art lovers. The young Seymour had no formal art instruction but he learnt to draw by studying the pictures and prints in his father's collection. At an early age he was introduced to some of the leading artists of the day, but at the same time he was encouraged to develop a love of the track, which eventually lead to his financial… Read More

Description:
Brussels: C. Muquardt, 1885. Chromolithograph, by P.Depannemaeker. Very good condition apart from some minor soiling and a few light foxing marks. A fine example of the spectacular botanical work by Berthe Hoola Van Nooten, from 'Fleurs, Fruits et Feuillages Choisis de l'Ile de Java'. Indigenous to southern Asia, the Mango tree, of which there are numerous varieties, belongs to the order of Anacardiaceae. It's sweet, fleshy fruit is among the most popular and well-known of all tropical fruits. In her early twenties, Hoola Van Nooten had accompanied her husband to Jakarta (Batavia), capital of Java, where he died. She was left with debts to pay and a family to support. With great ingenuity, she managed to get a selection of her paintings chromolithographed and published under the title Fleurs, Fruits et Feuillages Choisis de l'Ile de Java Peints D'Après Nature, the first edition of which appeared in 1863-4. "Van Nooten was clearly more than competent, for the splendid tropical plants... have been… Read More
