The title essay was first published in 1939 with the title, "Meet Mr Hershey"; here it is re-titled, and added are an essay by Hershey himself, and a memorial statement. The sheets appeared with the current title in 1754. Mary Johnson had been a housekeeper in York. The frontispiece portrait of her is quite handsome. Gilly Lehman places this work amongst a number of mid-Eighteenth century cookbooks aimed at educating servants who were often seen as lazy or incompetent. Stated "Third Issue". The Preface, dated 1 December 1891, states that this issue preserves the form and arrangement of the former, limiting revisions to Steamer changes and variations in rates. The original publication, the title of which translates as The Art of Prolonging Human Life (1979), contains what is considered the first use of the work "macrobiotic" and Hufeland's work on preventative and curative aspects of health made him the father of macrobiotics. With a library bookplate and withdrawn stamp of the Dragnothian Literary Society at Franklin and Marshall College. A bit of staining to preliminaries, otherwise very good in worn and scuffed boards in marbled paper.

The great economic anthropologist examines in depth the social organization of the fishermen of the Malay Peninsula. The book includes an index of edible fishes caught, as well as a large folding map of the village layout, with gardens, orchards, and other elements of agriculture integrated into the fishermen's community space. Older bookplate removed from front endpaper, a few small pencil marginalia, otherwise generally very good in green cloth. Lacking the dust jacket.

The Management of Bees was Bagster's first work, and remained in print until 1865. His second work on bees, Spiritual Honey from Natural Hives, was issued by Pickering in 1834. The author discuss the natural history of bees, and swarming, but is most interesting as a survey of historical methods of hive management, including the cottage system, storifying system, collateral bee-boxes, the hives of Mr. Huish, on ventilation, and finally the "Ladies' Safety Hive". The author's preface (following that of Dr. Lee), states her intention to address "the ignorance of nurses and attendants, in relation to the general management of the sick room and the preparation of suitable articles of drink and nourishment..." The book begins with general descriptions of Diet During Diseases, and then contains dozens of recipes for specific dishes and drinks for the sick and convalescent. Medical recipes, and antidotes follow, and the book ends with general rules for health, including entries for Reading Aloud (healthy), Wind Instruments (damaging to the lungs), and Friction (generally to be avoided). Internally foxed. The front panel of the original salmon-colored, printed wrapper is present. The rear panel is lacking altogether and the spine is partially perished. Boston: Carter, Hendee & Co, 1833. Duodecimo, [v]-xii, [13]-98. Three engraved plates (two hand-coloured). Second, enlarged edition (the first was published in 1831). Cobb [1799-1882] was a Massachusetts lawyer and pioneer silk manufacturer. He established one of the earliest silk mills in the United States in 1837. Based on his earlier researches, Cobb was commissioned to write the present manual, the first and most influential guide to American silk manufacture. Publication was subsidized by the government. The work was very popular and went through four editions by 1839. Publisher's cloth-backed, printed, paper-covered boards. The rear board contains a list of other publications by Carter, Hendee and Co. Some rubbing and light soil to boards. Internal dampstain to text block; light foxing throughout.
