This is a selection of Madame de Maintenon's letters. Françoise d'Aubigné, Marquise de Maintenon, was a French noblewoman who secretly married King Louis XIV. Although she was never considered queen of France, she was one of the King's closest advisers. Condition: This copy is in very good condition. There is light rubbing to the leather's extremities and board's edges. Inoffensive marginal pencil marks with the occasional comment, and a some minor spotted foxing, Otherwise the book remains in good solid shape.

The book starts with a brief chronological history of the college, register of headmasters, council etc, and the the main body of text is the records of pupils. Of chief interest is the inclusion of occultist Aleister Crowley on page 285 as Edward Alexander Crowley (he only attended for a short time, apparently he didn't enjoy his time there and behaved badly). Condition: The book itself is in good plus condition. There is a little rubbing and bumping to the boards, and a few marks. The contents are in good order, with pencil ownership inscription of E C Pennefather who left Malvern in 1899.

This book contains six essays by prominent historians and others detailing the importance of men of recent and current history. F J C Hearnshaw writes on King Edward VII, R H Bruce Lockhart on Lenin, R B Mowat on Aristide Briand, Eric J Patterson on Josef Pilsudski, Sir Charles Petrie on Mussolini, and E W D Tennant on Hitler (here with his christian name spelt as Adolph). Tennant had been a banker in the years before the Second World War who had worked towards closer ties between Germany and Britain. Condition: A good copy. There is some darkening and rubbing to the red cloth, light tanning to the prelims but the main body of text is in good order. Old bus ticket kept in as a bookmark, and a pre-war newspaper clipping on the men of the moment loosely inserted.

Not signed but this copy carries the bookplate of James Boyle, Whiteholme, Clayton-Le-Dale, Blackburn. The Boyles were owners of a confectioners firm in Blackburn (particularly toffee). This James Boyle was the son of the founder, and who became sole proprietor of the business until his death in 1921. An interesting book on the science of grasses, including several black and white illustrations, and charts showing the necessary amount of seeds for specified amounts of land. The book covers meadows, clovers, growing for food, etc etc. Condition: Good condition. The green cloth binding suffers from some mottled fading but the contents are in good condition, though there is a light vertical crease to the first few pages. Otherwise in strong readable condition.

Frontispiece lithograph of a library with a quotation from Wordsworth. 24.5 × 18.5cm, 656pp. A fine collection of quotations and thoughts on all manner of subjects, arranged alphabetically by subject. The author, Henry Southgate (1818-1888) was a London auctioneer and who became known as an anthologist and compiler. This copy has a previous owner's name to the title page, Broomhead Colton-Fox, who was a well known solicitor and was killed by a passing train when crossing the line at Victoria Station on December 15th 1893. It is signed to a family member Ralph was Ralph Gardner, vicar of St Mary's Church in Benfleet. Meditation is the art of being, and in this book Adelaide Gardner focuses on the naturalness of this state of consciousness and the great usefulness to be derived from it. Today, there is little doubt that a quiet and concentrated consciousness can deepen one's awareness of life and permit the achievement of a greater degree of inner peace.
