Description:
London: Penguin, 1976. 311 pp, 7 3/4" H. "Drawing on myth, folklore and history, the stories of 'The Mabinogion' passed through generations of storytellers before they were written down in the thirteenth century in the form we now read them. Set in dual realms of the forests and valleys of Wales and of the shadowy otherworld, the tales are permeated by a dreamlike atmosphere. In 'Math Son of Mathonwy' two brothers plot to carry off the virginal Goewin, while in 'Manawydan Son of Llyr' a chieftain roams throughout Britain after a spell is cast over his land. And King Arthur's court provides the backdrop to tales such as 'How Culhwch Won Olwen', in which a young man must complete many tasks before he can marry a giant's daughter, and 'Peredur Son of Evrawg', who strives to prove his valour as a knight. In his introduction, Gantz discusses the sources, oral tradition and artistry of the tales. This edition includes introductory prefaces to each… Read More

Description:
New York: Arco, 1974. 64 pp, 10 3/8" H. Profusely illustrated in b&w. "Some military writers have described the machine gun as 'the supreme infantry weapon' and during World War 2 it certainly maintained its tactical role inherited from the battlefields of World War 1. Its importance to all the combatant armies cannot be over-estimated as it played the part of prime fire-power source of all the infantry units of every combatant. This Fact File sets out to describe the machine guns used by all the warring nations involved in World War 2. Each machine gun is described and illustrated along with its data. All the machine guns used are mentioned including World War 1 veterans such as the German MG08 and the British .303 Vickers, and going right up to the famous German MG42. The coverage includes such items as the Indian Army's Vickers-Berthier, the Japanese Nambu series, the Russian M1910, and the Czech ZB26. Also included are the numerous light machine guns such as the Bren and… Read More

New York: Abelard-Schuman, 1968. 237 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w maps/battle plans, photographs. "Citing examples from both World Wars, the Korean War and Vietnam, the author shows how the concept of material destruction of the enemy through attrition warfare has prevailed in official thinking, despite the persistent lesson of negligible achievement at enormous cost. In his discussion of present trends in machine warfare, he emphasizes the vital importance of army-air mobility, at present being pioneered in the U.S.A. The twentieth-century phenomenon of machine warfare has highlighted mankind's alarming slowness in adapting its military ideology to technological innovations. (This book) provides an authoritative and absorbing insight into this basic aspect of human behaviour, and stresses the need for fuller study by psychologists of armed group conflict." Description:
Viking, (London, 1994), Ist thus. 182 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Bilingual text (English/Welsh). "A Machynlleth Triad, whose title recalls a medieval Welsh literary and gnomic device, fancifully describes - in both English and Welsh - the Welsh town of Machynlleth at three moments of its history. In 'Y Gorffennol: The Past', we visit Machynlleth during the Welsh rebellion of the early fifteenth century, when Owain Glydwr the patriot leader held a parliament and, according to tradition, was crowned Prince of Wales. 'Y Presennol: The Present' examines the town's personality in 1991, when it celebrated the 700th anniversary of its foundation. The English conquerors are gone; yet the Cymry Cymraeg, the Welsh-speaking Welsh, are not obviously in the ascendant. Wales is still in a kind of historical limbo. In the third part, 'Y Dyfodol: The Future', we are projected into the twenty-first century to visit a Machynlleth celebrating its… Read More

Description:
London: Quiller, 1992. 117 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w illustrations. "Marie Tussaud's achievement was phenomenal. In the first half of the nineteenth century it was hard for a woman to make a success of any kind of business without male partnership, money, or influence behind her. Marie had none of these, and yet proved herself a career woman ahead of her time. From her arrival in England in 1802 with a small collection of her wax portrait figures, she worked, a single-handed Frenchwoman, to create an exhibition which, when she died forty-eight years later, was a London institution and famous worldwide. The story of how she did this through talent, steely determination, and a capacity for hard work, is remarkable. She combined these qualities with a keen journalistic flair for what would catch the public eye." A small light soiling mark at the top edge of pages 7 & 8, a previous owner's name and date in ink on the front free endpaper, wrinkling at the bottom of the spine, minor… Read More

Phillimore, London, (1971), first edition. 240 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "Born in Brighton in 1851, Magnus Volk was a true pioneer of electrical engineering. While still in his early twenties he was employing a dozen or more workpeople, making a simple telegraph set which sold all over the world. In 1879, when he married, his house was the first in Brighton to have electric lighting...It was in 1883 that he built his original little railway in Great Britain. This was the start of a long struggle against both man and nature; but Magnus reacted typically to opposition, and extended the line - twice. Not content with this, he built another railway further east - a truly fantastic conception, nick-named 'Daddy-Long-Legs'. The book tells the extraordinary story of the electric motor-car he made; of the order he received for another like it from the Sultan of Turkey - surely the earliest export order for a car ever to reach this country; and of… Read More
