Blue and black lettering and symmetrical design to the spine. Publishers Borzoi books logo on rear board in black. Cloth a little toned and faint stain to the bottom of the front board. The spine is slightly darkened but overall a very good copy of this classic detective novel, featuring Hammett's San Francisco private detective Sam Spade.

A.Wilson. London.,1813. 6mo.(5.6 x 3.6 inches). Previous owners name, and date 1857, on front free endpaper. Bound, without half title, in contemporary half red sheep. Spine with gilt ruling, piping, lettering and decorations. Marbled paper on boards. A very good copy in a lovely early binding.:

(7.2 x 4.5 inches). 327; 288; 304pp. Library stamp of Cape of Good Hope Public Library on title pages and some brown marking to about 30 pages throughout the 3 volumes, otherwise a very good set bound, without half titles, in recent half tan calf. Spines with raised bands, red titles labels, gilt. The compartments lettered and ruled in gilt. Marbled paper on boards. Not in Sadleir or Wolff.

Macmillan and Co. London. 1908. EARLY HUGH THOMSON EDITION. 8vo. (7.4 x 5.2 inches). 40 full page line illustrations by Hugh Thomson. Publishers original salmon cloth with decorative floral design to front board and spine in brown, lettered in gilt. All edges gilt. Some minor offsetting to blank endpapers but internally clean and bright. Some marking to the rear board but still overall a very good copy. Becoming increasingly difficult to find in collectable condition in the publishers cloth.

Richard Bentley. London. 1847. Bentley's Standard Novels and Romances, volume 25. Reprint of the 1833 edition. 8vo. (7 x 4.5 inches). Illustrated frontis engraving by Pickering. Publishers dark brown morocco grained cloth with elaborate blind stamped decorative border to the boards. Spine lettered and decorated in gilt. Yellow endpapers with lists of other titles published by Bentley. Neat previous owner bookplate to the top of the front paste down endpaper. Some staining to the bottom of the frontispiece, not affecting the image or type, otherwise a very clean and fresh copy. The cloth is clean and tidy, with sharp corners, and the gilt on the spine still bright and fresh. A little rubbing to the extremities but this is a superior copy. Scarce in such nice condition.

Macmillan and Co. London. 1908. Reprint. 8vo.(7.7 x 5.3 inches). 40 full page line illustrations. A very good copy bound in fine quality early twentieth century leather binding. Half red calf. Spine with raised bands, twin brown labels and compartments fully gilt. Red cloth on boards. Red marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt. Binding by Young and Sons of Liverpool. Aside from some minor rubbing to the edges this is a very good, clean copy of this classic, beautifully illustrated, edition in an attractive fine early binding.:

Publishers original burgundy cloth with decorative blind stamped floral design to both boards, the front board lettered and ruled in gilt. Spine ruled and lettered in gilt. Page edges untrimmed. Internally a fine bright and clean copy throughout. A little rubbing to the binding extremities and just a hint of fading to the spine but overall a very good, bright copy. Becoming increasingly difficult to find in collectable condition in the publishers cloth.

Plain white endpapers with a neat previous owners bookplate on the front paste down. Binding is unsigned but obviously from a high quality bindery. Some fading to the spine but still an attractive fine binding.

Harper & Row. New York.,1965. FIRST U.S. EDITION. Illustrated with 8 maps, including 2 on endpapers, and 32 mono photo plates. Fine copy in dustwrapper. The book is protected in a red cloth chemise housed in a red morocco spined slip case, made by James Macdonald Co. New York. Spine with raised bands, ruled in blind. Lettered in gilt.

Gerald Howe Ltd. London. 1934. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. (7.6 x 5.2 inches). 27 line illustrations by Mary Shepard. One small, faint mark to the title page otherwise a near fine copy which is bright and clean throughout. Publishers yellow cloth with black lettering to the spine and front board, which also has an illustration of Mary Poppins. Illustrated endpapers. In the original illustrated grey dustwrapper which is split in two but is currently held together in a removable wrapper protector. There is some loss to the top and bottom of the spine and a large closed tear to the front panel with a small amount of loss. Small and neat booksellers label (Zeitlin Books of Los Angeles) to the rear pastedown endpaper. Overall a near fine book, with a little bumping to the top of the spine, in a good example of the scarce dustwrapper that is quite clean and more then 95% complete, so could easily be restored to it's former glory. Creasing to the top outer corner of 20 leaves, otherwise a vary good copy in a fine early leather binding by Riviere and son. Half blue calf. Spine with raised bands, the compartments decorated and lettered in gilt. Blue cloth on boards. Marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt. School arms and motto stamped in gilt to the front board and a school prize label, from Woodlands School in Deganwy in North Wales, to the front pastedown endpaper. A little rubbing to the extremities but overall a very good and attractive copy.

Longman, Orme, Brown, Green, & Longmans. London. 1841 - 2. FIRST EDITION. 3 vols. Illustrated throughout each volume with frontis and vignette wood engravings by the Author. Sadleir writes in his bibliography of 19th Century fiction that Taffrail, the writer of sea stories, informed him that Marryat himself drew the illustrations for this book, or at least supplied the sketches from which the drawings were finally prepared. A very good copy in the publishers original bindings of dark grey cloth with blindstamped illustration, possibly Captain Osborne, to each board, surrounded by a double ruled border. Spines with blind ruling and gilt lettering. This set has the later issue of volume one with the lettering stating Vol 1. on the first volume. Engraved frontis, Title page, 160pp. A very good copy in a fine early leather binding of full red straight grained morocco. Spine ruled, lettered and fully decorated in gilt. Both boards with a double blind ruled diamond around a gilt tooled centre design. Double ruled and elaborate decorative roll borders, gilt. Board edges and turn-ins with decorative gilt roll. Dark green endpapers. All edges gilt. A previous owner ex-libris has been removed from the front pastedown endpaper leaving a mark, and some minor bumping and rubbing to the extremities but overall a very good copy of the book in a highly attractive early 19th century binding. A very popular work, originally published in 1814, which was reprinted 14 times by 1830..

The compartments with gilt ruled lines, flower and leaf designs and lettering. Triple gilt ruled lines to the turn-ins. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Previous owners neat inscription, dated 1867, to the half title page. A lovely copy in a beautiful Victorian decorative leather binding. The binding is unsigned but the work of a skilled bookbinder.

Some pages a bit browned but overall very good in original publishers printed wraps, small stamps to covers.Some light creasing to wraps but still a very good copy of this fragile item. A little rubbing to the extremities and a couple of very minor bumps to edges but overall a near fine bright set in lovely decorative bindings.

Bright and clean copies throughout in fine recent leather bindings of full dark blue morocco, the spines with five raised bands, compartments ruled, decorated and lettered in gilt. Single ruled gilt border on boards. All edges gilt. Sassoon's masterpiece of autobiographical fiction. One of the great literary works of the twentieth century. --- The first volume was published anonymously in an edition of just 1500 copies and is scarce. A limited edition, signed by Sassoon, was published later in 1928 and matching limited and signed volumes were issued alongside the publication of the two other volumes.

Tan paper wraps, printed in black. Circular blind stamp of Bibliotheque de Deep sea salvage on the title page. Front cover has 'Editor of the Herald' written in ink across the top. Edges rubbed and bumped with some loss to the bottom of the spine. Corners creased and chipped a little but overall a very good example of this scarce Civil War time publication. Only one copy located on Worldcat, at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
