A leading exponent of the Haskalah in Eastern Europe and an early advocate of Jewish nationalism, Smolenskin is best known for the important Hebrew monthly Ha-Shahar which he founded in 1868, and edited—12 volumes in all—until his death (EJ Patternson). " Levovitz was the Mashgiach Ruchani of the Mirrer Yeshiva in Poland. One of the great exponents of Mussar. He was a talmid or Rav Simcha Zissel Broida one of the foremost disciples of Rabbi Yisroel Salanter. Below are eight fascicles printed in Shanghai. The first three fascicles were first published before the Holocaust in Baranovitch, the fourth was published in Kaiden due to the war. For a period during 1940, the town served as home to about 300 students and teachers from the Mir Yeshiva. After WWII, much of orthodox Jewry in Europe was wiped out, along with their many yeshivas (Jewish schools of higher learning) . Born into poverty in Russia, Smolenskin (1840 or 42-1885) was a writer and editor, and an early Jewish nationalist. In He founded and edited the monthly Ha-Shahar from 1868 until his death. Beginning in his yeshiva days, he was a proponent of Haskalah; interest in secular topics and Russian literature at first caused him no small amount of trouble. His first novel, Simhat Hanef, was written in the late 1860s. After travels through Europe, Ha-Shahar was founded in Vienna, and it proved to be the most effective mouthpiece of the Haskalah movement there, as well as a platform for early Jewish Nationalist thought.
