Pamphlet, 8vo, paper wrappers, 38 pp. Some wear and chips to wrappers, and edges, normal aging and toning; otherwise very good.A classic Indian captivity first published in Philadelphia in 1784; there were several later editions, the last in 1904. Gilbert and his family were captured on April 25, 1780, and taken all the way to Canada. A party of eleven Seneca Indians, who invaded the Pennsylvania frontier where the Gilbert homestead was located, took them. But not before their homes were plundered and torched. They did not return until September 1782. The Gilberts were a very well known family, especially among the Quakers of eastern Pennsylvania, and their captivity attracted wide attention. The narrative is based on an account given verbally by Gilbert to Walton. Sabin 27348, Field 608, Streeter III 1655. Church 1203. Ayer 303.

Description:
8vo, period full calf, morocco label, engraved frontispiece portrait, xii, [17],-429 pp., plus errata leaf. Front hinge cracked, and partially detached, covers worn, foxing throughout, foxing heavy on page 153. Heckewelder spent forty years as a missionary among the Indians in the Ohio Valley. He was praised for his understanding of the Indian language and customs, but is also know for his account of the massacre of the Christian Indians at Gnadenhutten by troops lead by Col. David Williamson in 1782. Field describes Heckewelder’s efforts as the noblest of human endeavors, but adds that the murder of ninety men, women, and children by the troops represented the worst of human nature. This massacre lead to further violence, as other Indians retaliated against white troops, and the frontier would be desolated for ten years.

Description:
12mo, publisher’s cloth backed boards, frontispiece, illustrated, 166 pp. Binding a bit worn and soiled, and what appears as remnant label on spine, early owner signature and inscription on endpapers, normal aging and some browning; otherwise very good, and a fairly tight copy.
The present work appears to be a reworking of a journal published by Jewitt in Boston in 1807. At least two editions were published of this book in 1815, one in Connecticut and the present volume, which was published in New York. Despite the fact that this work was published in numerous editions, Alsop felt he didn’t really do Jewitt any real good, because he seemed to be reduced to a vagabond like existence marching around the country hawking his book (Field). According to Streeter Jewitt was the first white man to live with the Indians in Nootka Sound, and the work presents an excellent account of his adventures. Considered a very accurate portrayal of the tribes in this area, with much detailed information about their… Read More

Description:
Pamphlet, 8vo, removed, illustrated, 86 pp. Probably lacking self wrappers, dbd, removed, some notes on title, last leaf folded in the lower corner; normal aging and browning; otherwise a good copy. This pamphlet is a U.S. Sanitary Commission report that includes four pretty dramatic illustrations taken from photographs of Union soldiers in a very emaciated condition. The photographs were taken shortly after the prisoners returned from Belle Isle. The commission appears to be headed by Valentine Mott (former head of the medical department at the University of New York) who was to find out if the sufferings of the POWs were a deliberate action of the Rebel Government, or were the result of matters a beyond their control. Another edition of this work was published in Philadelphia in the same year. A map of the Andersonville prison is also included.

Description:
2 volumes, 8vo, contemporary brown straight-grain morocco, illustrated with 23 engraved plates & 3 folding maps. Rebacked retaining worn remnants of original backstrips, endpapers renewed; engraved matter variously foxed. Leather separating from boards in places in volume one, and a few chips in those areas. Beechey’s expedition to the Beering Strait and beyond was supposed to help the Franklyn and Perry Expeditions, and make scientific observations. He made stops along the Alaskan coast and describes Eskimo villages and culture, and even discovered fossil remains of large elephants and other quadrupeds in cliffs of frozen mud. Beechey’s work also provides an account of Monterey and San Franciso “before the American conquest”. He also made it to Pitcairn Island where he met John Adams the last survivor of the mutiny on the Bounty, who gave Beechey a lengthy account of the incident.

Top joint is cracked and barely attached (second volume), spine in second volume detached on one side, endpapers in second vlume are detached, library bookplates on paste downs. Meehan goal for this work was to improve popular comprehension of the subject, without sacrificing good science, and by the way at a price people could afford. The concept of bringing more sophisticated botanical knowledge to a wider audience was rare. However, Meehan received a lot of critical success for this effort at that time (Nissen, Botany 1331).
