Later full leather with red spine labels, marbled endpapers. Scuffing to extremities, old restorations to half-title and title pages, one map with some foxing and splits at folds, some penciled annotations in the margins. Bindings sound, plates clean and bright. Hind's exploration of the country between Lake Superior and the Rocky Mountains was prompted by the need for a land access to the gold fields of British Columbia, as well as the possible establishment of a railway route to the Pacific Coast. His narrative provides a wealth of information about customs, beliefs, and condition of the native peoples. Each volume stamped in gilt on the front board with a short title and the name Mary Dow. A brief pencil inscription on the front flyleaf of Volume II reveals this to be Mary Amelia Dow of Carson City, Nevada, who received these volumes as a gift on her 21st birthday (January 22, 1881). Both volumes scuffed at corners and along the joints, slight variation in the color of the leather between the two volumes, typical offsetting from the plates to facing pages, but overall a sound and attractive set. Touch of wear to corners and spine ends, brief contemporary gift inscription on front free endpaper, spine a little dulled, but still a lovely copy. Murphy offers "a motor tour covering in a few weeks the more important shrines and most famous scenery of New England," which is "undoubtedly the most popular motor touring section in the world, and a section where such travel is increasing from year to year.
