(Chanticleer, 109) A scarce limited edition, with an interesting provenance. From the private collection of C.G. Littell, with associated letter from the proprietor of the Golden Cockerel Press, Mr. Christopher Sandford. In the letter, Sandford acknowledges a criticism of Mr. Littell that the book was printed with "entirely too much ink." Sandford agrees and offers to change out the book for him.

A rare newspaper, The National Era, dated September 2, 1852 and published by G. Bailey. Four pages, large bi-fold folio. Separation along bottom seam, some loss of text. Delicate condition. Includes speech by Charles Sumner on the motion "To Repeal The Fugitive Slave Bill - August 26, 1852." The Fugitive Slave Act mandated that former slaves caught in the north would be extradited back to the south. It was nicknamed "The Bloodhound Law" by abolitionists. It was passed along with the Missouri Compromise and was the most controversial part of the bill. Enforcement of the law ended with the outbreak of the Civil War.

Complete with two fold-out maps of Cincinnati and the Miami Country, light toning to each map, free of tears or restoration, both near fine. (Sabin 20822) (Howes D465) (Thomson Ohio, 346) An interesting first edition piece, which details the history of the Cincinnati area. It is the first study of the geology of the western Ohio Valley, with special attention given to "elephant fossils" at Big Bone Lick (later discovered to be Mammoths). It also details Indian mounds within Cincinnati proper. An important book on the early Ohio country and Cincinnati in particular.
