First English language edition, originally published in Paris the previous year.  Beautifully illustrated travel guide to Naples, with high quality photographs illustrating the City and the everyday life of the Neapolitan people.   The high-quality heliogravures were printed by Braun & Cie, Mulhouse of Paris and give the book a crispness and clarity unusual in most travel books from the period.  With faults to the dust jacket a  nice copy of a well-illustrated book.   .

London: Printed for Richard Ware at the Bible & Sun in Amen Corner Warwick-Lane, 1732. 8vo.  205 x 140 mm., [8 ¼ x 5 ½ inches].  Engraved title-page and 12 engraved plates.  Bound in later decorated paper boards.  With a typed paper label identifying this copy as "Nevinson Loan 1979 No. 18," on the front pastedown; pencil ownership inscription of costume historian J. L. Nevison dated 1959 on front free endpaper, Penciled numbers and occasional smudges to margins of the plates. First edition of this drawing manual offering designs of hairstyles, costumes, and attitudes by the noted French artists and engraver, Bernard Picart.  The title of the work is engraved within a rococo style shell and floral vignette and although unsigned is no doubt a design used by Picart in many of his works.  The twelve plates offer the art student Picart's sense of how to draw the hands, heads, hair, and wardrobes of fashionable people in the first part of the 18th century.  The plates are both stylish and… Read More

Illustrated with 10 full-page plates and 18 half-page wood engravings by Randolph Caldecott.  Original decorated publisher's cloth; edges bumped and showing very minor wear; some minor foxing to the edges, otherwise a very good copy. First edition, inscribed by the illustrator Randolph Caldecott to Frederick Green, dated 19 March 1878.  Lively travel book, the theme of which is the political, geographical, social, pontifical and poetical aspects of Italian life, characteristics which make Italy such a wonderful country to visit.  Alice Carr's is a book of memory, happy times among happy people, written  to bring to life her journey throughout the Riviera region and the Apennines.  The illustrations by Caldecott perfectly capture the tone of Carr's work and reinforce her focus on the common elements of everyday life in northern Italy. .

Philadelphia: R. F. Stockton, 1842. Folio broadside. 520 x 375 mm. (20 1/2 x 14 1/2 inches). Folded with minor tears to edges. Foxed with some browning to the edges, but the paper quality is sound. Captain Robert F. Stockton (1795-1866), noted New Jersey military man, politician, and entrepreneur, was involved in many business ventures during his time in and out of public office and the military. He invested in canals, railroads, steam engines and was instrumental in developing John Ericssons's steam powered naval vessel which launched in 1844. This little-known venture with the Sugar Loaf Railroad and Coal Company of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania demonstrates Stockton's business acumen and entrepreneurial spirit. In 1839 the locomotive engines, the "Ajax" and Achilles" were shipped to Penn Haven on the Lehigh River where they were leased by the Sugar Loaf Coal Company to move anthracite by rail between Beaver Meadow and Parryville. Bassano, 1794. 8vo.  xxi, 3, 243 pp.  Late 19th century red morocco spine and tips over marbled paper boards.  Beautifully printed on thick paper, with wide margins.                                                               First edition of this catalogue of books of fiction in the library of Anton-Maria Borromeo.  Borromeo (1724-1813), son of an illustrious family, was born in Padua and educated in the classics and science.  He became a great collector of manuscripts and printed books and formed one of the first collections of Italian fiction.  His Notizia de'Novellieri contains descriptions of 250 works, mostly of the 16th and 17th centuries, and includes significant commentary on the writers and subjects of this early novelistic tradition including Luigi Alamanni, Giovanni Battista Amalteo, Giulia Bigolina, Pietro Fortini, Vicenzio Rota, and other.  It is the first bibliographical catalogue of its kind and was republished in 1805.  After his death in… Read More

Davis, and woodcut head and tail pieces, initial letters, and printer's ornaments throughout.  Bound in contemporary calf, gilt diamond decoration in the center of both boards, single fillet gilt boarder, leather label; expertly rebacked, some scrapes and staining to the boards; with original marbled papers.  With faults a good sound copy. The second edition considerably enlarged, originally published in Milan in 1822, with a text of 24 pages.  A scarce wine publication, which discusses the use of a mechanical process to produce aquavita, an archaic term used to refer to wine, the water of life.  Part history, part philosophy, and part viniculture, Grisetti describes the evolution of wine making and provides a new method which uses modern techniques and equipment to produce wines worthy of the "aquavita" made in Rome centuries earlier.  Some focus on the best vines grown in Piedmont.  Most of the text is a  step by step methods for wine production.
