Ahmed Karahisari was one of the great Ottoman calligraphers of the sixteenth century, whose naskh style was reminiscent of the Abbasid master scribe Yaqut al-Musta'simi. He worked by royal appointment under the patronage of Sultan Suleyman I in his lifetime and his surviving manuscripts are housed in important Ottoman collections such as the Topkapi Palace and the Topkapi Museum. 'Shipton was a natural choice for the Mount Everest expedition of 1933 on which he reached 27,900 feet, but the experience of those two lavishly organised undertakings convinced him that this was the wrong way to travel in the Himalayas and his next venture was in stark contrast. Augsburg, [c.1815] . Engraving with aquatint, finished with fine hand-colour, tear to left portion of sky skilfully repaired. A fine view of Napoleon being shown ships departing from St Helena. The other French figures depicted in the print are most probably General Henri-Gratien Bertrand, Grand Marshal of the palace, and his wife, who went into voluntary exile with Napoleon.

Rodger (1908-1995) co-founded Magnum Photos with his colleagues Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa and David ("Chim") Seymour in 1947. In 1947 and the 50s he organized more than forty expeditions to Africa, the Middle East, Haiti and Bali and became the best chronicler of the lives of African tribal people. He also organizing several expeditions in the Sahara desert that lead to publications in the National Geographic.
