Stockport, England: Dewi Lewis, 1997. (110) pages. Black and white photographs by photojournalist von Graffenried; introductions by art curator Harold Szeemann and photography critic A. D. Coleman. Signed, without inscription, by the photographer on the title page. Von Graffenried spent 3 years introducing himself to members of the Swiss Friends of Light, a longtime naturist organization (nudist colony) on Lake Neuchâtel in Switzerland. He was able to persuade some of them to agree to being photographed in their everyday lives within the colony. The photo pictures Fulton with another pilot standing in front of a jet plane at the Hugh L. Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base. Provenance: from the collection of Lee Saegesser, Chief Archivist from 1967 until 1997 in the Washington, DC NASA Headquarters History Office. Culpitt was the British magician who invented the Doll House Illusion and was the first magician to appear on television. One of four books written by Chicago magic dealer August Roterberg, this book is in the original red cloth-covered boards lettered and decorated in gilt. Image is 12 inches by 10 inches on a 13 5/8 " by 11 1/2" sheet. The map features topography, railroads, Indian reservations, cities, and small towns and uses outline color to set off counties from each other. It is guaranteed to be at least 135 years old. New York: Albert & Charles Boni, 1925. The book is signed by Ernest Hemingway in the upper right corner of the front free endpaper and is, in all likelihood, from the personal library of Hemingway. Hemingway had worked for Ford on the staff of the Transatlantic Review in 1924, the year before this book was published. It was purchased (by Hemingway?) from the iconic Holliday Bookstore (note the label on the rear pastedown endpaper). Provenance: I purchased the book 25 years ago from the estate of a Jacksonville, Florida book collector, and it has been in my personal collection since then. The book is a second printing in about good condition: there is some waviness of pages--perhaps damaged when Hemingway was "deaccessioning" it from his Key West home when he was at the apogee of his personal feud with Ford?. Personally signed by President Johnson on a bookplate that includes the presentation written in calligraphy (probably by Sanford Fox, Chief of the White House Social Entertainments Office): "To Carl Hayden with my best wishes Christmas 1967." U. S. Senator Carl Hayden was at the time the longest serving (1912-1969) member of the United States Congress. Often called "the Silent Senator" because of his tendency to avoid speechmaking in favor of working behind the scenes, Hayden was especially effective in promoting the federal highway systen and federal programs for mining, irrigation, and reclamation in the American west (especially in his home state of Arizona). Originally written in 1839 by Radcliffe, the Master of the Hertfordshire Hounds, this 4th edition was edited, revised and expanded by first William C. A. Blew and then later by Cuthbert Bradley.
