Description:
London: Punch, 1945. This original printed appearance of a Punch cartoon featuring Winston S. Churchill comes from the personal collection of Gary L. Stiles, author of Churchill in Punch (Unicorn Publishing Group, 2022). His book is the first ever effort to definitively catalog, describe, and contextualize all of the many Punch cartoons featuring Churchill. This cartoon titled "NO DIM-OUT" appeared thus on p.206 of the 7 March 1945 issue of Punch. The artist is A. W. Lloyd. The cartoon is captioned "'The lights burn brighter and shine more broadly than ever before.' - The Prime Minister." As the House was dealing with the difficulties of the postwar Polish border, Churchill spoke out on the "Freedom of Poland" bringing a roar to the House. In the cartoon, the light is quintessentially Churchillian, emanating from the form of his trademark cigar, which he holds aloft. Punch or The London Charivari began featuring Churchill cartoons in 1900, when his political career was just beginning. That… Read More

Stiles, author of Churchill in Punch (Unicorn Publishing Group, 2022). His book is the first ever effort to definitively catalog, describe, and contextualize all of the many Punch cartoons featuring Churchill. This cartoon appeared thus on p.578 of the 21 May 1930 issue of Punch and is captioned "Mr. Winston Churchill, in the Debate on the Naval Conference. 'NO ONE CAN DOUBT THAT I HAVE BEEN CORRECTED.'" The artist is A. W. Lloyd. The Naval Conference took place in London in October 1930 to sign an agreement by the U.S., Britain, and other nations limiting naval ship building. On 14 May, Churchill inappropriately read extracts from secret government documents, leaving the House of Commons shocked and aghast. After much turmoil, Churchill apologized. Description:
Woodford, England: AP Wirephoto, 1959. Photograph. This vintage press photograph captures Churchill on 20 April 1959 in one of the very few public speeches of his final years, speaking to his Woodford constituents to announce what would be the final time he stood for Parliament. The gelatin silver print measures 10 x 8.2 inches (25.4 x 20.82 cm). Condition is good plus. The image remains respectably clean and bright, despite a vertical crease that runs at a slight angle bisecting ChurchillÂ’s right elbow and right leg. A lengthy printed caption at the foot of the image is titled “NO TIME FOR REPLACEMENT” and reads “Sir Winston Churchill places his watch back in his vest pocket at Woodford, England, when he addressed his constituents Monday night. The 84-year-old statesman told his audience he would serve in the House of Commons as long as his breath holds out. He has been a member of Parliament for 59 years (AP Wirephoto) (pr31259lon)1959”. The verso of the photograph features some pencil… Read More

Norwalk, Connecticut: Easton Press, 2005. Full leather. This is the lovely Easton Press edition of the first book by the man who would become the twenty-sixth President of the United States. Statesman, reformer, explorer, naturalist, soldier, rancher, and author, Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) was the youngest ever president, both herald and agent of AmericaÂ’s assumption of global power. Though widely known as a quintessential man of action, Roosevelt was accomplished as a scholar and author. Description:
London: Ministry of Information, 1940. First edition, only printing. Pamphlet. This scarce wartime pamphlet is the first and only stand-alone publication of then-First Lord of the Admiralty Winston Churchill's speech in the House of Commons of 27 February 1940 . "I come before the house, on behalf of the Navy, to ask for a few men, some ships, and a little money, to enable them to carry on their work, which has become important to us all at the present time." Thus Churchill began this speech in the perilous, early months of the Second World War. This pamphlet publication of Churchill's speech in self-wraps is printed on quite thin, cheap wartime paper, staple-bound with a drop-head title and no title page. It measures 9.75 x 6.375 inches and is 8 pages in length. Though 15,250 copies were printed, the extreme fragility of the wartime paper means that copies seldom appear. This copy is in near fine condition. The pamphlet remains crisp, clean, and complete with no previous ownership marks and no… Read More

Description:
London: The Liberal Publication Department, 1915. First edition, only printing. Pamphlet. This item is the original pamphlet publication of Churchill's February 15, 1915 speech in the House of Commons - his final time introducing the annual Navy Budget as First Lord of the Admiralty. This pamphlet is 20 pages, bound in wire-stitched paper wraps, and measures 8 x 5.25 inches (20.3 x 13.3 cm). Most surviving original Churchill speech pamphlets of this era were once bound in annual compilations by the Liberal Publication Department, or remain thus, per Cohen (p.195). This is such a copy, trimmed from the original 8.5 x 5.5 inch size and featuring the number "8" hand stamped on the upper right corner, indicating that it was disbound from the collected "Pamphlets and Leaflets for 1915-1918”. This copy is nonetheless otherwise complete, bright and clean with no spotting, soiling, or previous ownership marks. The original "PRICE ONE PENNY" remains intact at the bottom edge of the front cover. The… Read More

Description:
New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1923. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. J. J. Lankes. This is a jacketed and inscribed first trade edition, first printing of the book that won Robert Frost his first Pulitzer Prize. Frost inked this copy in eight lines on the front free endpaper recto with the final five-line stanza of the poem Our Singing Strength (printed at p.110): Well, something for a snowstorm to have shown | The countrys singing strength thus brought together, | That through repressed and moody with the weather, | Was none the less there ready to be freed | And sing the wild flowers up from root and seed. | Robert Frost | For | John Stuart Groves. The sole previous ownership mark we find in the book is the small, illustrated Morocco bookplate of JOHN STUART GROVES affixed to the front pastedown. Groves (1881-1958) was an accomplished Delaware bibliophile. On 1 January 1933 Frost wrote Dear Mr. Groves: I shall be glad to write my name in your copies of my books. I have a warm place in… Read More

Description:
London: Faber and Faber Ltd., 1975. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This jacketed first edition, first printing is inscribed by Heaney in three inked lines on the front free endpaper recto: For Alan | with good wishes | Seamus Heaney. Condition of both volume and dust jacket is conservatively graded as very good plus. The blue cloth binding is tight and unfaded with bright spine gilt, minimal wear confined to extremities, a slight forward lean, and a hint of faint, whitish mottling to the boards. The contents remain respectably bright. The sole previous ownership mark is the authors inscription. Differential toning to the endpapers corresponds to the dust jacket flaps and confirms that this copy has spent life jacketed. Light spotting and modest age-toning appears confined to the front pastedown and facing free endpaper and the page edges. The dust jacket is complete, unclipped with no loss or tears, with only mild toning to the fade-prone pale blue front panel and spine and light soiling… Read More

New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1919. Second, limited American edition and first illustrated edition. Hardcover. This is a particularly compelling presentation copy of a striking limited edition of the authors second published book. This copy not only retains the original dust jacket, but is also inscribed by the illustrator and signed by the author. Robert Frost signed his name in the blank lower right margin of his frontispiece portrait by the illustrator, James Chapin. Chapin himself inked a warm gift inscription in five lines on the front free endpaper recto: To Max & Ruth who, | in sympathy watched | the growth of this | garment | James Chapin. Opening with the famous poems "The Pasture" and "Mending Wall," North of Boston bolstered Frosts newly minted literary reputation and precipitated his return to the United States from England.
