It's noted as the first copy received from the publisher (1946), it has subsequently been inscribed by Crisp, the artist, to fellow artist Mervyn Levy. A lovely set of inscriptions. The jacket is tanned to the spine and a little edgeworn, and printed on wartime paper (the reverse is a French map). There's a chip to the top edge of the jacket rear. Nice shape overall. Currey has no proirity between the first two issues with ads dated 535 and 835 (May, 1935 and August, 1935). It would seem logical that the first batch of books to have ads inserted would be those dated 535 and the later batch being 835, there is however nothing to assert that given the publication date of October. Personally, I would suggest that the 535 state would the preferred one. The main text block is otherwise indistinguishable. The jacket is complete with moderate edgewear, head of spine crushed with some tears and creasing. Forecorners and lower tip similar, but to a lesser extent. Prelims foxed a little. The book's set in 1970, but published in 1961 and involves nuclear war, British isolation and the woes of ageing. Presented with a proof copy of the same. Proof is fine, book is near fine with just a few signs of ageing including a bit of tanning to the spine, a slight lean and some very gentle edge wear. 20mm tear to the front fold. Inscribed by the author to Sir John Martin Harvey, theatre manager and actor and bearing his plate to the pastedown. A Bangsian fantasy it seems, which would be apt. This one revolving around Greek mythology. For those who aren't aware, Bangsian fantasy mostly takes place in the afterlife, often with famous characters taking a role. Inscribed by the author thus: "For David \ This novelisation's \ of a Disneyland ride! \ Cheers, \ Tim Powers", upside down as is the author's style. Powers has mentioned a number of times how the Disneyland ride, which spawned the films, was a great influence on the book. Powers wrote the book after Lester Del Rey had rejected 'Anubis Gates' and 'Dinner at Deviant's Palace', but found Del Rey rejecting 'On Stranger Tides' too. Ace then picked the book up, as the feedback Del Rey had given Powers was strong enough to allow Powers to further sculpt the book. The present copy, being the first English edition, came out the following year. Perhaps best known for his more recent work with the Folio Society, particularly the Lang Fairy Book and Pratchett's Mort. Uncommon signed by Rayyan, and one for the collectors. A fine copy of the first impression. Introduction by Esther Friesner, and a further introduction (apology) by Pratchett. An important work really for Pratchett, gathering together so many minor pieces in one place, including essays, short stories, articles and fan pieces.
