Description:
214 pages with frontispiece, color plates, diagrams, illustrations, photographs and index. Quarto (12" x 8 1/4") bound in original wrappers. First edition. The criteria for including a club into this bibliography were: 1) A verifiable club founding in Germany up to 1914 - The term "German" or "Germany" is used geographically; 2) the existence of at lest one commemorative publication (without restriction in regard to the publication date). However, whether the club still exists today was not a criterion, and thus clubs, which had been disbanded a long time ago (as, for instance, the SV Anderssen Frankfurt a.M>) could be taken into account. The basic design of the bibliographical entries is almost self-explanatory and does not require extensive explanation. All chess clubs were included chronologically according to the foundation date of the club, and if a club had several commemorative publications these were also registered chronologically. The first entry always gives the name of the club, followed in… Read More

[iv]+368 pages with half title. Small quarto (8" x 5 3/4") bound in contemporary vellum. (Palau 190923, Sommervogel V,1743) First printed in 1649.
This work which first appeared in 1649, was considered by E Allison Peers to be "one of the great religious books of its century" (Studies of the Spanish mystics). Menendez y Pelay described Nieremberg's style as "spontaneous, lively, erudite and elegant"
Nieremberg was born in Madrid to German parents. He studied the classics at the Royal Court, science at Alcalá and canon law at Salamanca. He joined the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1614, much against the wishes of his father who finally obliged him to leave the novitiate of Villagarcía. He remained firm in his resolution and was permitted to return to Madrid to finish his probation.
He was highly esteemed in devout circles as the author of De la afición y amor de Jesus (1630), and De la afición y amor de María (1630), both of which were translated into Arabic, Dutch, French, German, Italian and… Read More

His Relación histórica de la nación tulteca (usually called Relación) was written between 1600 and 1608. This was an account of many events in New Spain, and many events of the Toltec people. Description:
xxxviii+331 pages with maps, tables, photographs and indexes. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1/2") bound in original pictorial cloth. Prologue by Robert V Kemper First Spanish edition.Perhaps no region of North America is as little known to anthropologists as northern Mexico, between the border with the United States and a line that runs from the mouth of the Pánuco River to the southern limit of the state of Jalisco. This section has generally been considered a place of transition, an area in which the cultures of southern Mexico have blended with the culture of the Pueblo Indians. The work of discovering the relationships between the cultures of North America and Mexico cannot be completed without many years of study, and it may be well to make it clear from the very beginning that this work is not intended to be definitive. It limits itself to systematically gathering a part of the information available on northern Mexico and suggesting certain tentative conclusions.Condition: Spine ends and corners… Read More

58-78 pages. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1/2") complete volume 84, number 1 in original publisher's wrappers. First edition. This paper reinterprets the structural interpretation of Greek mythology presented by Leach and Levi-Strauss from a feminist perspective. The reinterpretation approaches the Oedipus myth and Freud's analysis of it from the perspective of Antigone, daughter of Oedipus and a hero of Sophoclean tragedy. Ancient Greek tragedy allowed a few mythic women the role of hero, although women in ancient Greek society were confined to the domestic sphere. The paper discusses Antigone, Electra and other mythic women in their relations to family and the public domain. The interpretation of Greek mythology differs from previous ones but is not inconsistent with them. Condition: Light edge wear with some light soiling else very good.
