Old vertical folding crease, one photograph circled in ink; otherwise very good. The Professional Woman's League was formed in 1893 "to bring together women engaged in dramatic, musical, and literary pursuits with the purpose of rendering them helpful to each other." Based in New York and composed primarily of actresses, the League held weekly meetings devoted to different literary topics as well as business matters. Their main philanthropic efforts included maintaining an "extensive stage wardrobe, continued by donations of dresses by celebrated actresses" that members could purchase at minimal or no cost and offering small loans and/or donations to those "overtaken by sudden grief or misfortune." Both a program for a Shriners convention and a guide for visitors to Portland and vicinity, this attractive production includes seven colored views of local scenery (downtown Portland, Rose Festival, Crown Point, Horsetail Falls, Shepperd's Dell, etc), as well black and white images of commercial and municipal buildings, parks, and harbor. The text touts Portland as "the center of a great territory, full of potential resources....capable of indefinite growth" and describes many local attractions. Attendees were also provided an extensive schedule of activities, including sightseeing excursions, concerts and dancing baseball games, a horse show, a decorated vehicle parade, and pyrotechnic display.

Original dark blue cloth with bright gilt lettering and decoration. Corners rubbed and bumped, spine ends rubbed. Crease in cloth on front board. Some signatures a bit loose, but none detached. Occasional smudged pages; text otherwise unmarked. Reading served as a missionary to Gaboon, and later as a commercial agent for the United States. He recounts his party's journey from Philadelphia, which took them through Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, and Gold Coast. Includes some discussion of the American Colonization Society's efforts in Liberia; slaveholding in Africa; commerce along the coast and rivers; prospects for a railroad and commercial development of the interior. Issued with three folding maps, of which two (Plat of Columbus as Incorporated, June 3, 1818 and Map of Ross County, 1819) are present here in complete form and one (Map of Ohio, 1819) is mostly missing (northern 1/3 of state present). All 21 smaller county maps in the text are present. Columbus plan has been mis-folded and is worn at the outer edge and has some old repairs to the verson. Boards scuffed, moderate foxing throughout, otherwise unmarked, binding sound. An early edition of this popular work, which was first published in 1816 and offered detailed information for those considering a move to Ohio. Presentation inscription on the title page to a member of a prominent Allegheny County family, "Mr. R.C. Wrenshall from John Way, Jr." Wrappers are chipped and only just attached (by a thread) to the text block, most of backstrip is gone, margins of the page with the original photograph are foxed.
